2 years ago...A friend and I cleaned out a guys driveway...one 1980 stepside GMC truck, one 1985 Oldsmobile car and one 1981 I/O Marlin boat...$1450.
Sold the truck for $1500(in 2 weeks) Sold the car for $950(in 2 months) AND 2 years later we are just starting to look at the boat... The floor is crunchy all the way up to the walk thru to the open bow and the right motor mount is ripped out (Rotted wood) I cut the floor out tonight to find the wood floor and stringers are toast all the way up to the front (the hull is solid) ![]() At this point the parts are worth more than the boat BUT at what point is a boat really done?? After I clean up all the mess the repair looks fairly easy(3 new stringers ,new sheet of plywood, and some fiberglass work and a new carrier for the motor Better Than Factory)...Normally I wouldn't even mess with something like this but it would be a learning process....AND if it ends up on the bottom of the river WE are still ahead of the game a few Hundred dollars. At last count I have 5 to 8 projects, a girl friend to spend time with, and a house to work on....need more parking and a huge garage. Oh YA a little more time wouldn't hurt as long as I'm adding to the wish list.

What's the outside of the boat look like? If it were me, I'd put some gas and a match to it.
Good luck, post some pics along the way. |

Im impressed that you think that repair will be fairly easy!!!
I replaced the transom on an old Ranger bass boat, I too thought that was going to be easy!! It was a pain in the arse!!! |

This is what the boat looks like from the outside...16ft open bow (1981)nothing special but I am also redoing a 21ft jet boat as soon as the paper get straightened out...I figured this one could tide us over till we get a bigger boat(we also want to build a wake board tower for it IF the 2.5 motor pushes the boat good enough. We did about 2 more hours on it today and made some more progress removing the floor and stringers. The wind picked up and lost the daylight so should be able to remove the last center stringer Tuesday after work. Looks better already.

Ye of little faith
If we trash/donate the boat...we have another season without hitting the water. Off to the lumber store tomorrow for 1 2"x8"x 12' 4 2"x4"x8' And 2 sheets of 3/8" x 4'x8' plywood. The auto parts store has the gallon of fiberglass resin with hardener and I have high bid on some fiberglass mat/cloth on Ebay. |

Hey looks like you did a great job! I'm curious, what brand motor is it and how about the trailer axles (buddy bearings)? Did you have to do anything to them? I'm thinking 20 years old and they may have needed to be changed??
With the ladder in that position, how do you put a ski rope on that thing? Clear title? I'm in NE Phx, if I wanted to see it, where is it? What kind of condition (and what size) is that motor in? This post has been edited by Crowbar: May 30 2005, 07:13 PM |
