I am getting close to converting from a quad only guy to a quad and buggy guy. I will be the first in our group. I am 41 and have wife and 2 year old son. We have a 30' Warrior trailer, are from Northern Cal, Dune about 8 times a year, Dumont Glamis pismo oregon idaho nevada. I was pretty convinced I was going with a busa powered King or Tom Pro with a 3 across bench seat but a rail has come up for sale close by that seems like it might be another option. It is a Tatum Sand Demon with a Mazda F/I turbo, O-91. I have been watching the sales activity of cars for 2 years now and it seems the mazda engines are a hard sell no mater who's frame they are in. I've ridden in one at glamis and it seemed to dune quite well just a little loud in that back seat Whats your opinions? If we decide we don't like this car is it going to be a b#$%^& to sell. He is asking 25K Thanks

Go with the King unless you like working on Mazda engines. From what I've heard and seen, they need a lot of tinkering and upkeep. JMHO

I have A tatum spyder with a rotory and love it. I have hade it for about 4 seasons and have only had to do regular maintance. The car is light and nimble and will beat most v8 cars. If you ever need work on your motor go to chris at danzio he will make it right. I have driven king cars and I think that the are among the best mini rail out there.I was going to get my wife one but bought her an amplified instead. If I had to choose between a king car and a tatum I would rather dune, hit the woops, and race a tatum. |

I had a Tatum Sand Demon with a fuel injected, turbo rotary built by Redline (350HP to the wheels). The thing hauled the mail. Very light package.
Rotaries are loud, and there isn't much you can do to quite them down. Biggest issue to making them last is keeping them cool. Overheat and you may warp the apex seals and need a rebuild. They do use the gas and drive like a hopped up two stroke. You have to stay up on the RPM level to keep in the powerband. I had a 2D in mine and had problems. Be careful about a 091. |

The turbo spooling up is loud and they can burn alot of race fuel But my ls1 is just as loud and used even more regular gas this past weekend. |

QUOTE(CripKnievel @ Nov 6 2006, 12:19 AM) Rotary = JUNK save your money. Junk--- Wwooaahhh Thats a harsh statement. Have you owend one or maybe some one you have met. Ask any one that knows me and they will tell you that my rotory has been very reliable over the years. I know nothing about fixing this motor and have never had to tinker with it. I have had 2 rx7s when I was young and beat the s*** out of them and the motors stood up. The power band is not for everyone. You need to no what you are doing much like riding a banshi but when it hits it sure is a rush. |

I think rotarys are just like any other motor ...get some one that knows what they are doing to work on them and they will be dependable to a point like any other mechanical thing. If you look at the horsepower per cubic inch these motors put out the are hard to beat, there are a lot of them running around in the import circles making big #'s

I had a rotary in my last car built by Redline. The car had 4 seasons on it and made 465hp to the ground. I never had a problem with my 2D or my engine. I had to to re build her the 4th season. The only thing you need to do is make sure you do mix the gas and keep her cool. Oh dont use the clutch to wheelie.

Thank you for the advice, now I'm more confused or should i say unsure than before, with the 50% yes and %50 no I think I will err on the side of caution and let her be. With the small amount of trips we do and the long distances we go to do them, reliability needs to be high. Thanks

I to have a rotary in my car for 3 years now and no probelms. I also have a 2d and no problems with it. It is different to drive with the 2 stroke power band .........i love it!!! You do not have to tinker with them either once it is dialed in by the tuner it is good to go! If the motor is built by someone repitable you should have no probs with reg maintainence.

we had a rotary in our group and it was the fastest car around @ 460 rwhp it had a 2d no real problems with the motor just dont try to force it into gear and drop the hammer bent lots of shift forks... by the way it was a 2 seater you will want to change out the 091 for sure

i have never run a rotary in a rail, but the fastest rail i have everseen was a 3 rotor 20b motor, dont no who built the car but it had a roulette wheel painted on the side of it. i have owned 3 rx7, 2 first gen and a 3rd gen. i have driven a 4th gen and found it to be a quick motor. the negative about having a rotary in anything is you need to drive it like a 2 stoke. the power band in narrow and violent. just not my cup of tee, i like being able to put my ls1 in 3rd gear and dune it like an auto.

Nothing wrong with a rotary... the biggest problem is the number of dumbasses that were out there at one time tuning them and owning them.
Rotary motors like to run a bit rich... start pinging on a rotary and you're likely to lose an apex seal. Overheat and you're likely to have a bad day... Beyond that, if the oil metering pump isn't on the motor, be sure to run premix to keep the motor lubed... don't let it overheat, and don't let it ping. A rotary is a badass motor in a small package. Be careful listening to the opinions on the Internet... you get a lot of people that heard from a friend of a friend of a guy who was at their campfire talking about rotarys blowing up all the time when they saw Ferris pass out at 31 flavors last night. I've heard almost as much BS on the internet from people that don't know squat about what they're talking about... everyone wants to put their 2 cents in, but that 2 cents isn't worth a penny from a lot of people... unless you're asking about the best way to polish a wheel or how to postwhore or complain about politics. Rotary motors are fine if you take care of them, just like any other motor... change the oil, and sweet talk it from time to time and you'll be golden for years... I've heard dumbs***s talking about how rotarys have no redline, and how you should never wash a sandrail... Do a little homework and get an understanding of how stuff works and how it breaks... if you need more re-assurance after that... seek someone who knows what they're doing... Like someone mentioned before... Call Danzio. |
