Another reason I'm against camping too close to the tracks. Heck, I can't stand driving down the wash road while a train is flying by either!

Maybe I'm just picky since my dad worked in the trackwork industry for a few years (He managed to pull Pettibone out of the red long enough to last for 3 more years until their competition bought a steel mill and was suddenly able to create track for less than Pettibone could get raw materials for.)
But I'd say a derailment is a specific type of wreck

Not any better, just more specific about what casued it.
Derailments are pretty common out here in the desert. It's the temperature extremes the track is subjected to. From 120+ in the summer to below freezing just a few weeks ago. Like any material the steel in the tracks expands as it gets hot and contracts as it gets cold. That causes the spikes to get loose and things can slip out of alignment the next time it expands/contracts. They do regular maintance on the tracks but it's a lot of track and needs a lot of attention so sometimes things happen.
The looser material the tracks are on in this area doesn't help either. Once things start to get a little loose they can get a lot loose quick.

WINTERHAVEN — A Union Pacific Railroad cargo train derailed near Ogilby and Ted Kipf roads near here late Tuesday, causing a 42-railroad car pileup and destroying 600 feet of track.
Union Pacific spokesman Mark Davis said the accident occurred at 11:17 p.m. in the far southeast corner of Imperial County.
The train was carrying oceangoing containers filled with freight, including consumer goods and furniture, from Long Beach to West Memphis, Ark., at the time.
Davis had no estimate as to when the accident would be cleaned up. Until the track is cleared and replaced, Amtrak passengers from Los Angeles to Tucson, Ariz., will be temporarily rerouted.
Davis said there were no injuries.
