Anybody relocate the fan on the ds650 to the front of the radiator? Anybody use a different fan instead of the stock P.O.S.? Anybody have pictures or ideas of how to re-locate the fan? How about getting rid of the fan alltogether? I am gonna order shrouds this week and get one of the new inline coolers but any other ideas would be great. Thanks.

I know.... Sell it, Get a Honda, Yamahas are better, my bikes faster than yours and so on .... We all know so theres no need to post it!

I don't have a ds650, so naturally I haven't moved the fan..BUT..at least in the car world, a "puller" fan (behind the radiator) is much more efficient than a "pusher". Before you make such a mod, be sure you'll have adequate cooling capacity after you are done..smile.gif

Thats whats in there now, a puller fan. I think the exhaust overheats the fan and kills it. These fans have been an issue in these things from day one.

DH, The shrouds will take care of you fan issue. On the part about moving the fan, I don't think there is enough room for a pusher fan. I will check this out when I get home. The steering stem and oil tank are right in the way. Run the shrouds and you should be much cooler. :cheese: Wrench

I am still running the stock origional fan. No issues. I added the shrouds after the first season. 2 years ago. Wrench

DH cant make a fan last longer that 10 minutes. I keep telling him to stop using the home depot fans but NO.. mr. smarty pants just wont listen..

Seriously though.. Maybe its time to find out why you blow through fans so fast when other don't have the same problem..
downhillin1
I was just wondering.... I saw on another ds website were they said they ran a smaller fan in front and it fixed the issue. They also said a few other guys ran without fans all together.

Shrouds will be on there wya in a few days. Any ideas as to wich ones to get? I was planning on Alba.

Another question pertaining to re gearing.... 1 down in front? Oneup in back? I down in front AND 1 up in back? Any suggestions? I am guessing this will also help since I wont have to run such high RPMs if I bring the gearing donw a bit.

Maybe I am running a little hot. Jetting issues maybe? Maybe I just ride it harder. Inexperience maybe? Who knows? Any help would be great.

One off the front is same as adding 3-4 to the back. It will RAISE your RPMs, not lower them. I would not mess with the range of RPMs for cooling issues. If you find your constantly shifting 2nd and 3rd and back to 2nd and back to 3rd etc.. then gear it down a notch and you will be solid 3rd. that was what I did on the Zuki. you lose on the top end but gain on the bottom and torque.

You might want to see if your getting too much voltage at the fan or there is too much resistance in the electrical wires from the fuse block to the fan? If you want bring it on by this weekend we could check it out, and try the red-line @ the same time... its a bike/moho weekend for me.

Actually 3rd and 4th. Screaming 3rd and bogging 4th. I want something that will pull a little more on the hills. I was guessing maybe down 1 in front would bring the gearing into a range where I could run a solid third. I am not really worried about the top end. If I do drop a gear in front will I need a chain break to take a link out? Or should I go down one in front and up one in the back to even it out and make it so the change is really drastic?

I added Engine Ice to mine seems to run cooler.
Haven't had any trouble with the fan though, it runs and runs and runs.... biggrin.gif The folks that ride with me just love it. :cheese:

I thought this was a cool (pun intended) idea.

Notice the temp guage on the fender.
downhillin1
That is pretty COOL. You do that yourself? Might look into something like that myself.
ZukiFreak
DH just get an automotive electric temp gauge and/or rockymountainatv.com has them too and just pumb it in to where the sensor is for the idiot light.

I might.... I have that whole areao where the tach is suppposed to go.

I am buying a DS650 next month are there any other issues that I need to be aware of?

Thanks

It weighs a ton!!!

All in all its been a great bike. A few things that you will want to do right off the bat.... Barnett Clutch, Pipe, and maybe a K&N or other afternarket filter. I love mine and wouldnt change it for anything.

What made you decide on a DS?

What made you decide on a DS?

A couple of different things

1) Bombardier donated a DS to the ASA to be raffled Alba sold the other one to the ASA at cost and donated all of the aftermarket parts.

2) reliability they have proven in the baja 1000

3) Weight really isnt that that bad of an issue for 2004 they put the DS on a diet and are dropping somewhere between 30-40 lbs.

4) 653cc of ROTAX POWER for which there is no substitute for. They are changing the rev limiter from 7500 to 7800 for 2004.

5) Most if not all the people who own one are happy with it

I have planned in my budget to get a pipe, K&N, and a cooler rack.

Weight isnt even an issue with these things. That motor has more than enough to get it to do what needs to be done.

Hey Chris, I'm also thinking there's too much power getting to that fan.
downhillin1
Checked that today.... 12.6 volts. What I did find out on some other boards though, is that there is to much vibration and the brushes come loose. I am gonna open one up today and take a look. Ill take some pics and put them up.
THE BOMB
Haven't any problems with the fan on my 2000 DS, I tried once to run it without and noticed major heat build up. Have an Alba pipe, removed the airbox and ran open K&N. Run the biggest main jet you can find, I forgot what size it is, haven't touched mine in awhile. Recently rebuilt clutch, new rear carrier bearings, and new battery (hint-use the Bombardier snowmobile batt-same specs-way cheaper). I run just dunes and recently changed gearing, one down on front, and a 44T on rear-major difference! Just spend the money and get the DID o-ring chain, I tried a Sidewinder- it lasted two weekends. The DID is built like the DS-Bomb proof! Another Hp trick, this ones a freebie-pull the intake Y manifold and hone it out using a sanding drum (air or dremel too) you'll notice a big increase in power, in stock form it's very rough inside.

The bike might be heavier than most other brands, but it doesn't break for anything. You can ride it 110% all day long and it doesn't miss a beat. I can ride with the fastest Banshees. I must admit that I hate to sell it, but with a new $40K LT on the way, momma says goodbye to all the quads. This has to be the most reliable machine I've owned so far! If anyone's interested it's for sale on the Glamis for sale site. And if it doesn't sell maybe I'll have to keep IT!! OH DARN!! tongue.gif

I've had many people come up to me and say they never saw a DS driven so aggressively, usually it's an old guy on them putting around. So when you do kick butt-people trip-out! Lotts of Fun!!

I pulled the fan from the beast with the help of my girlfriend, and a few things came to light. This is the fourth fan that I put in here. Unfortunately the first one that was replaced by warranty was not done by me and was done by WHITTIER KAWASAKI or WHITTIER FUN CENTER. So I will start there. Dont go there. They dinged up my radiator so bad its a wonder that the thing cools at all. I may be able to clean this up but it is going to take a few hours of useing a radiator comb or something that I can slide into the cooling fins to clean it up. Is there an easier way??? FHJ????

The Spal fans that are in these quads prolly are not ment for such a quad that vibrates so much. I know that the 2002 and 2003 have a different fan mount with rubber grommets. Hope that fixes the problem. After openeing the fan up, which is no simple chore, I found this.

The little solder that is used to attach the leads to the brushes has broken. I am planning on re-soldering these and applying a bit of High Temp RTV sealer to the backs of the brushes. I am hopeing that this will dampen some of the vibrations on the leads and keep them from brakeing off. I am then gonna re-seal the whole thing with the RTV and slap it back in.

Next issue.... You guys that have put the radiator scoops on these things.... Do you have any pictures or insight on how they attach to the quad. Mine came with no mounting instructions. A little help here??
