Here's a round-up of news that the White House and Pombo are attempting to make the fee demo plan permanent

http://www.caluwild.org/docs/July_UPDATE_Web.htm#2
Rep. Richard Pombo (R-CA11), Chair of the House Resources Committee, has just indicated his intention to soon reauthorize (i.e., make permanent) the Recreation Fee Demo Program - for ALL the four agencies involved (Park Service, Forest Service, BLM and Fish & Wildlife Service).
As new Chair of the Resources Committee, which oversees all public lands, Rep. Pombo hasn't until now revealed his position on the Recreation Fee Demo Program. Now thatwe know he's supportive of making Fee Demo permanent, we must immediately demonstrate how contentious a move this will be, by an outpouring of protest mail and calls to Rep. Pombo's offices.
We also know that the White House is pushing strongly for permanent public lands fees. It's been a while since we've asked you to contact the White House about Fee Demo. Now is the perfect time to send them the message, again, that Fee Demo must go (except for National Parks).

During the floor debate on the DeFazio/Bradley amendment Representative Pombo, Chair of the House Resource Committee made it very clear, as did written testimony by Rep. McInnis (Chair of the Forest and Forest Health Subcommittee) that they intend to introduce legislation in the House Resource Committee to authorize (make permanent) the Fee Demo program. Representative Pombo and Representative McInnis both stated that the program could be “fixed” and that both implementation problems and financial/accountability issues could be resolved. We expect this legislation to be introduced sometime later this month or early in September.

Fee demo forces the public to pay for activities, such as hiking, on public lands that have traditionally been free. The program was created after severe budget cuts for the land management agencies, as am outgrowth of the “government must pay for itself” attitude of the 1980s.
Many people fear that the fee demonstration program is a first step in the commercialization of our public lands, both directly and by focusing planning efforts on activities most able to generate profits. Pure wilderness of course, does not create a lot of profit for agencies, since “improvements” are minimal, if they exist at all.

Our long-time readers know that the Recreation Fee Demonstration Program, commonly known as "Fee-Demo", is a key tool to implement a privatization agenda for our public lands. Since its introduction in 1996, Fee-Demo has been instrumental in commodifying outdoor recreation and setting the stage for the commercialization and privatization of recreation on America's public lands. Enacted without ever having a stand-alone vote, Fee-Demo currently is set to expire at the end of September 2004.
George Bush wants Fee-Demo made permanent, and the House of Representatives already has agreed to extend it for two more years. The Senate will take up the issue after August recess. House Resources Committee Chair Richard Pombo (R-CA) is expected to introduce legislation that would greatly expand the current program and opportunities for "public-private partnerships" (read, "corporatization of our Commons").
No bill number is available for this imminent legislation, but you can call or write your elected officials to voice your opinion on Fee-Demo extension and commercialization/privatization of America's public lands. Call the Capitol toll-free at 1-800-839-5276 or 1-888-508-2974.

When you see who is supporting Pombo-(all the Glamis business people) and they are not asking anything about the fee demo issue--you start to wonder if a deal has already been struck.

We'll give you the closures back--you support the fee demo at Glamis.

Why hasn't Vor or Jet commented on this?

My college Physical Geography teacher (who was an environmentalist, by the way) told my class that ONE volcanic eruption (ie Mt. St. Helens) causes more polution than humans have caused since the beginning of the Industrial Age. He showed me the link to it on the internet, but I don't remember where it was now. These people suck a$$. I'm going to go get in my pollution-producing truck now and I'm going to go buy some beer. :burn:

Plug up all the volcanoes, or the enviro's are going to get mad!!! And make it illegal for lightning to start forest fires!!!!! :hot: :hot:

keep the fee demo where its at, at make cuts on useless items. im sure lots of money is being wasted trying to resolve this issue, and hiring this contractor costs money. who pays for that? we do! do their jobs better and save everybody some money.

I hate to have to say this, but if this demo fee issue gets any more out of control, there will be only one solution - strike! If for one season everyone does not go, or at least does not pay, the BLM either will have to cut the funding to the things that most of us don't give a s*** about, or find another way to fund them. In the short run, this will definitely hurt us. This doesn't mean we have to give up the fight on the rest of the issues - it just means we will be willing to hit them where it hurts most.

My opinion.

Blu is just attempting to cause a riff between us and Congressman Pombo. I suspect Blu is, like many of the environmental leadership, afraid of our good relationship with this powerful Congressman.

Don't bite folks, Pombo may have some views a bit different than we may like, but overall he is our friend and will hopefully help us with the "big picture" as it may relate to BLM management of California desert lands.

WTF do you care Blu. You troll.

When was the last time you were at the dunes? Never. So that means you don't pay. So this is none of your business.

KEEP YOUR NOSE OUT OF OUR BUSINESS YOU PATHETIC LITTLE TROLL
The Pastor
If Pombo is our friend then he needs to get on the "anti-DemoFee" side of this argument.
