Being from northern Cal. several people I have run into say they go to Buttercup-It's an 9 hr drive to 'G' -so I'm thinking a few more is not a big deal / So what's the hipe of Buttercup-less congestion?-convince me.
Putting a trip together about Thanksgiving with a Nor-cal group.( In some way I got elected to investigate)

Thanks in advance peace.gif

Where in Nor cal are you? I live up near Sonora and I make the trip down to Buttercup about 3 times a year. I have a big group of friends from Tucson that goes there every anther weekend.

I would say the dunes are sweet, the area is more/less family oriented. (Still have a few rowdy young one, but compared to Glamis…)

Definitely worth the trip… peace.gif

Just east of Hughson- We use to compete in the charity pull at the fairgrounds every July in Sonora. Not sure what happened with that; but it was an great event -for a good cause!

I know our group got tired of the Pismo thing years ago so Dumont/Sand Mtn./have been the most recent spots -Glamis at holiday times are just to much going on-if you know what I mean.Good to hear family oreinted Thanks Sick dayz

Buttercup is usually not as wild as Glamis on the big weekends. Dunes are smaller, but still fun. Gordons Well is another option INMHO, dunes are a little bigger, still not as crazy as Glamis on big weekends.

Our groups train of thought is Gordons on Big Weekends, Glamis on off weekends. We are a group that stays away from the craziness and the overly loud noise, at all hours of the night.

To answer you question directly, I would not drive longer to Buttercup on a off weekend, but that is just me.

Hughson, I drive trough there every now and again. My business takes me all over Northern Cali.

Yah, they used to hold that tractor pull event at the fair grounds each year, during the fair. The money went to the local Special Olympics. My wife is the Director for the Special Olympics in Tuolumne County. She took over the position about 1.5 years ago. She said they stopped doing the tractor pull about 3 years ago, not sure why…

Maybe we’ll see out there one day. We have been going to Sand Mountain 1-2 times a year and then Dumont 1-2 times a year. I haven’t been to Pismo, and I just haven’t had the urge to go there. It just doesn’t sound appealing to me, the biggest problem being the salt in the air. dunno.gif Although, I did make some new friends from Bakersfield that go there all the time...

Is that a Jess Motorsport car in your avatar?

Special Olympics- Yes ! Sorry it's been a few years bugsy2.gif Good to see people helping others -keeps us all grounged.Planning next weekend to sand mtn. Jeff Jess has a group of buggies going the 13-15 if interested? Yea-Jess 4 seat-big difference from the old 2 seat. 6cyl.high Jumper.

Pismo -man do things change- Late 70's early 80's the best experience as a young buck. Free reign with no worries or crowds.Camped at the rv park before the ramp-ride right down the beach no loading or unloading -gas pump at BJ's in the sand -fill up and go! Went about a year and a half ago-Took the kids for there first experiance in the sand -Left about two hours later- what a disapointment.Rust was allways a issuse-Every night you hose down and wipe- took care of it.Our area( tulare to Stockton)-I believe most still go to Pismo, just not me.

small dunes and alot of drug smuggling (about a mile or so to the border). Look out for guys on quads with no lights and helmets spotting for the runners. Other than that bring the family it's a lovely place.

Buttercup is only about 35 minutes farther than Glamis. Dunes are alot tighter but fun.

I'd love to go up and hang, but I already have plans. My season is over. Starting a chassis swap…

I ran into Jess out at Dumont on Memorial weekend. He was just pulling up to the old mining caves “ruins” and we were checking out his car. Very impressive!!! I met him and his son. Seemed like nice people…

I'll keep in touch thumb.gif

I wish! Out last weekend and almost ran over by four guy's with no lights , no helmets, no whips, no paddles, no googgles 1/2 in from Midway driving through the dunes with no lights? Next morning a Dodge mini van was stopped by boarder patrol in front of our campsite at Midway, BP said they arrested four or five for drug smuggling! oh maybe that was the tv I was watching? Can't say it happens all the time, but it did that weekend. So just be carful and watch out if your at Buttercup.

There are some bigger bowls on the west end. Some of these open up to big flat areas that are incredible for flat high speed sliding, especially with virgin sand. The first set south of the Freeway has some medium size dunes that have great transition from one to the next. Still one of my favorite sections in all of the dunes.

You should go, you will like it........... 25cheers.gif
