A co-worker of mine has a 2000 Beartracker that he is having a problem with, he says it is backfiring, idles rough, and the rectifier is almost too hot to touch after it has run for awhile. Any Suggestions on where to start trouble shooting? thanks

Jetting! if he added an aftermarket pipe, or did any aspiration mods, this could lead to the problem....or even crappy gas.
SHOCKER
If its idleing ruff it could be the idle screw isnt adjusted right.

Basically he said it ran fine, then he parked it for a couple of months. When he went to ride it again it started this backfire thing, He said he put fresh gas in it, tore down the carb and cleaned it, but still no luck... I told him to change the plug, check his idle adjustments, maybe valves need to be adjusted???? And what about the rectifier getting hot?
SHOCKER
If it hasnt been touched it shouldnt need any timing adjustments. Backfiring means its got to much gas that didnt burn and sits in the header until a spark hits it. maybe the jets need adjusted.

yeah, I told him maybe his floats stuck when he put the carb back together

thanks for the replies tho
SHOCKER
It got to be something with the carb, change the sparkplug though sence its been sitting.

ok now he says when he pulls the choke out to the first stage it doesn't backfire, by the way I forgot to say its backfiring through the carb...
SHOCKER
Thats strange. :dozey:

Sounds like a lose timing chain or one that has skipped a tooth. The valve isn't closing on the intake port when it's supposed to.
