The Sands of Time

The Southern Pacific Railroad first laid track in Glamis en route east to Yuma in 1877. Many towns emerged along the railroad to supply water for the locomotives and repair track, such as Ogilby and Glamis. Many of the houses that were built in Glamis at the time were built by the Southern Pacific and painted yellow for the railroad section workers and their families. No houses are left due to the modernization of the railroad.

Ogilby was a well known town on most maps. It had housing for railroad personnel along with the American Girl (gold) and Tumco (tungsten) mines nearby. It also had two grocery stores and a Post Office. The Ogilby stop of the Southern Pacific was a large depot. In 1932, the depot burned to the ground. Water was so scarce that the locals could do nothing but watch it burn.

In 1979, a 100 yard sand drag strip called the GLAMIS INTERNATIONAL SANDWAY was built behind the Glamis Store. It was a very popular track, and advertised for the March, 1982 WINTER SANDNATIONALS. The first night racing was scheduled for Labor Day Weekend in 1982. It was soon closed. However, the track has recently opened up and is now performing sand drags again, but is again now closed, and is not performing drags.

They say that this was the first dune buggy ever made. Al Allen stands with “Old Man Johens” and Al’s custom-made sand buggy on the side of the GLAMIS STORE, 1942.
