Full Version: Why Don't Environmentalists Need To Buy A Pass To Access The State Owned Property Of Their Choice?

maybe some of the CORVA guys can answer this for me.

It seems unfair that us off-road guys not only have to register our vehicles (and that money is mismanaged, but that is another post 259mm.gif ) to go off-road, but also have to pay for a use permit at most of the areas that I am aware of.

Pismo...5 bucks a day
Dumont 30 bucks a week
Glamis 30 bucks a week

How much does it cost to hike @ the kelso dunes??? free.
How much does it cost to hike in death valley??? free
how much does it cost to go backpacking in the sierra nevadas??? free

just doesn't seem fair to me

what would seem fair to me is to charge a use permit for hiking and backpacking, and then use that money to open up more riding areas..

just a thought

Good luck with that. Sounds like a good excuse to hire more law enforcement. 25bangin.gif

it just doesn't make sense to me. When we purchase our vehicles, whether a quad, rail, SXS, jeep, etc, we pay taxes. on top of the taxes already paid, we have to pay another tax for our green stickers here in CA, then, another tax as an entrance fee to off-road parks...

seems to me we take it in the shorts, while the greenies get off scott free.
Crusty
Not true.

Most of those places require "Mountian Adventure" Pass to park anywhere.

But I'd vote on a Law requiring "Green" sticker program for Birkenstocks laugh1.gif

No kidding. Off-roaders have been charged for everything under the sun, and all that money just disappears in to thin air eh? Taxation with out representation is what it is called by some. I call it off-highway robbery. What are you going to do about it?
nosocks
Don't they have to pay to park their vehicle anyway? At glamis you HAVE to pay to park your truck somewhere.

Well, I have already contacted my local politicians, as well as my state RAPEresentatives carrot.gif . I think it would be great for groups like CORVA, FoOD, FoDD, ASA and other like-minded groups to lobby for equal treatment.
The Wife
They already are. Several of the orgs have gotten together and hired themselves a lobbyist, Pete Conaty, to represent us in Sacramento. I am pretty sure CORVA, ASA and SDORC are among those who are paying the bill.
APHANTOMDUCK
Mr. Conaty represents the following as of the latest reporting period:

AMA District 37 Dual Sport
AMA District 37 Sports Committee
CORVA
Friends of Oceano Dunes
SDORC

http://cal-access.sos.ca.gov/Lobbying/Firm...mp;session=2007

ASA is not represented as of this reporting period by Mr. Conaty.

Yeah and make 'em pay to park when they go out to count milkvetches and lizards.
Permagrin
A taste of their own medicine is just as sweet.

SEEMS. SEEMS. No brother it it not your imagination. Hiking boots are made of rubber just like quad, mocycle or rail tires. Hiking leaves trails too. Hikers leave trash too. Hikers have to crap and piss too. I think hikers should have to register their backpacks and boots.

The "them" being referred to in this thread (the green extremists) don't go out to count milkvetches and lizards. The people making the reall effort to do that are committed OHV folks and BLM employees and/or interns.

Something to think about.

Granted, I feel it’s unfair to charge the public to use public land, whether it’s us OHV folks, the backpackers, bicyclists or anyone else.

HOWEVER, the costs for gobernment services associated with our sport are, IMO, much higher then for say hikers/back packers. Using Glamis/Dumont as examples, there are no equivalent type(s) of places/events for the ‘backpacking crowd’ that bring in 20,000-100,000 people in a weekend, let alone what those areas see between October and May. In short, the non-motorized recreation group doesn’t need the law enforcement, EMT and trash collection that we do. When have you ever heard of law enforcement declaring an unlawful assembly (for things like disorderly conduct, public nudity etc) at a recreational gathering of the Birkenstock crowd? In an average weekend, how many EMT calls are needed at Yellowstone or the Grand Canyon? Just doesn’t happen.

More money is spent on us, and rightly so, because we incur more costs. The only debate is, should ALL taxpayers pay for our play or should we bear more of the costs since we are the primary beneficiaries?

We already do pay for these services, via greensticker fees. It is not our fault that these fees are mismanaged & squandered away on other things.

What some folks don't realize is that just $7. of your two year Green Sticker registration fee goes into the OHV program.

wow. sorry to sidetrack too much, but is that amount actually written somewhere as a rule, or is it more like after it goes thru everyone's hands etc. it turns into $7

Mismanagement still should not equal more fees for us to access public land, IMO.

It is law, by the legislature. One of the places it is found is in the California Motor Vehicle Code:

38225.  (a) A service fee of seven dollars ($7) shall be paid to the department for the issuance or renewal of identification of off-highway motor vehicles subject to identification, except as expressly exempted under this division.

$8. goes to the DMV to issure the stickers
$6. goes to the CHP
$4. goes to the "in lieu" fund which is suppossed to get divided up and go the the counties where OHV use is occurring, according to the findings of the recent fuel tax study.

Its going to make sure the EMT's are THERE to proivide the service you get billed for as opposed to them not being there and you depending on private citizens and/or yourself to get you to the hospital. It's just like the trash cans. We are paying for the trash cans to be there and be emptied, whether we put trash in them or not.

EMT's and law enforcement are also not out there 24/7/365. The staffing right now is much smaller then it was in October.
