Rep. Richard Pombo (R-CA11), Chair of the House Resources Committee, has just indicated his intention to soon reauthorize (i.e., make permanent) the Recreation Fee Demo Program - for ALL the four agencies involved (Park Service, Forest Service, BLM and Fish & Wildlife Service).

I'm a bit confused....
From the look of the above ad's it would seem that the greenies do not want the demo fee's either.

What difference does it make to them?

As I see it some of the money will go toward perserving "fragile"
eco area's etc..... so what gives?

That's a darn good question. If you get a look at the list of groups that support this movement, you'll be amazed.

The prevailing theory on why they would be so set against this is lack of control.

When funding is controlled beyond a local level, it can be corrupted. The people controlling the money can be swayed (just look at the OHMVR).

But when the funding is brought down to a local level and fees that are generated by the users of specific areas are managed locally, the anti-access groups can't get their hooks into it... in order to touch it they'd have to participate in the recreation area and that's just now how they work.

But that's just one theory.

Good god! And I thought I was the conspericy guy!!!

The fact of the matter is that Demo Fee was conceived by a bunch of corporate giants... including the Disney Corporation.

The purpose is well documented. They want to start the comercialization of public lands. Their are other provisions in the Demo Fee law. Provisions that provide for land management agencies to give huge contracts to large corporations to provide "recreation" to the public.
It may not be so clear to us, out at Glamis, where there isn't much there... But I assure you, there are many, much more lucritive properties that are owned by the public that the large corporations want to get their hooks into.

The environmentalists stand on this is that the commercialization of the public lands (turning Glamis into disneyland) will destroy the environment and restrict the publics access to those lands.
(pretty much what I've been saying all along about Demo Fee)

If Demo Fee achieves it's goals we will have a huge hotel, waterpark, and rental OHV's. Pavement will be everywhere and you'll have to make an EXPENSIVE reservation, two years in advance.
This is why environmentalists are against Demo Fee and this is why I am against Demo Fee...

I concur with VOR's post.

Also, greenies like to visit the outdoors too and we resist having to pay to park and go hiking.

I am against fees at OHV OPEN areas because that will just invite people to ride in the LIMITED or CLOSED areas. The whole idea of OPEN areas is to draw OHV rec into a legal area and to protect the rest of the areas. Charging fees only works against riders complying with the law.

Have you ever wondered why so many people dump their trash, garden clippings, furniture etc in the desert or by the roadside? Because the minimum charge at the landfills is over $20.00.

Republicans in Congress have a mandate to cut taxes by cutting services. They cut support services to our armed forces, they cut budgets for education and public services like libraries and cops. Now they want to further cut the budgets of our Nat'l Parks and public rec areas.

If you vote Repubican they are doing what you want them to do.

Let's not spoil this "agreement" by clouding it up with partisan politics! wink.gif

There is plenty of blame for Democrats as well as Republicans.

The fact is that congress is "under the gun". They've wasted our money on frivilous crap and see a way to make some more money by charging the public for access to public lands. The real money will come from corporations who will be "contracted" to provide a "recreational experience" to the public.

I read a statement the other day:
ALL national parks and publicly administered land could be funded by less then a single dollar per person.

Our little $6mil budget, which should really be about $2mil is PEANUTS... It's NOTHING.
I propose that we all write to our representatives and explain how they can prevent WWIII simply by funding Glamis.
There IS talk of protest. There IS talk of anarchy. There is talk of backlash.
All of this would be solved if congress would just step up and FUND GLAMIS!!! $2MIL is NOTHING!

Imagine, without Demo Fee there would be no worries about how the BLM would collect the money, or how compliance would be raised above the 40% mark, or whether the money was being spent on the proper items...

THIS WHOLE DEBATE WOULD NOT EXIST AND THERE WOULD BE NO PROBLEMS IF DEMO FEE DID NOT EXIST AND CONGRESS FUNDED GLAMIS PROPERLY.

We could then get back to the important debate:
When the hell will the closures be lifted???

The bottom line is that the fee's are wrong!!! Regardless of what party you align your self with, or which side of the land access debate you represent! :x The land belongs to the public! Charging an access fee to visit what is already ours is just an another attempt by our government to milk the public dry!!! :x
