Well, I've been kicking this idea around for a while now and TTFN sorta beat me to the punch.
The holiday season is just around the corner, so I think this is a good time to start. talked about it with VOR at Bohica's party and I want to know what you guys think of hooking up a canned food drive? What I want to suggest is that at every Taco Tuesday or whatever little get togethers we have, everyone bring in one can of food from now up until Thanksgiving/Christmas, take your pick. Someone will need to volunteer to collect the food. Then, AS A GROUP we donate this stuff to homeless shelter, or something of that nature. Remember, this kinda stuff ain't welfare, it's people doing a humane thing for other people. Not only is this an honorable deed to do, but it also puts GD.COM on the map for things outside of just duning. Helping others out and at the same time gaining a little more credibility in the eyes of those who want to close our home away from home down seems like a great thing to me.
Please, post your opinions on this and let's get this thing rolling!!

Sounds Great!
I need more details though.
Also, a Toy Drive for sick or under priviledged kids would be cool!

I think that's a great idea. Peeps can bring a can and/or toy!
I'm not sure where we would take the stuff but I'm sure Wayno and I can find the time to help deliver it.
More info?

Sal, take the ball and run with it buddy! This sounds like a good thing, I will help out. Maybe I can start with the AZ party next weekend.
But more details about this proposed idea would be great.
Thanks Sal
well, I guess we would need input from the group as to where to donate, to whom... stuff like that. I need to see if we can get peeps from the orange county/l.a. area to hook up like the san diego peeps do for taco tuesday so we can hang out and get more stuff collected. if we do a toy and food drive, then we should save up all of our stuff for christmas.
Maybe this coming taco tuesday peeps can start pitching in... we need a few volunteers to stock the food/toys so not just one household is holding all the stuff in each area.
do you guys wanna donate the goods to somewhere over there in san diego? I don't know of any place over there so this is where you guys decide. wherever will be great. the point here is to help out and not to mention get us recognized and maybe some support for our cause. we're duners and much more!!! can I get a woo woo? I will start looking where to donate...
Just remember, every out of glamis gathering everyone should bring in a can of food and/or toy and, believe me... it'll add up real quick!!!
Thanks for your guys' support on this
Oh yeah... since this is on behalf of GD.COM, do I need the Slapmeister's approval on this?!?!?

Sep 7 2003, 12:35 PM
Sal, I will make sure Slap sees this.
Just MY opinion, but since Michelle is doing the toy drive, maybe this effort should focus on the canned food collection. Doing both is OK too, but it just adds to the amount of work for those who volunteer. Either way, I will help out.
I say as far as L.A./Orange County is concerned, we should start doing a Taco Tuesday type thing maybe every other week... People from north of San Diego don't really live as close to each other as others and finding a center point has been kinda shady in the past, so maybe doing this every other week would work. Bring two cans?!?!? I will volunteer to collect over here. Arizona peeps could do it also!! Even do their own thing over there...
Date?? Saturday December 20 seems like a good date for us to donate the stuff. Right before Christmas and on a weekend. When we do donate, I'd like for as many of us to be there as possible. This is on behalf of ALL of us.
For now, I need to set up a meeting point for us L.A./ORANGE people so we can get this thing rollin....

Sounds good!! Let's focus on the food then!!!
So, this will focus our efforts into a homeless shelter or something of that nature, correct?
Alright!! It's starting to sound like a plan!!

Sal,
Even though what you are talking about sounds a little bit different, I found this site with some suggestions on doing a food drive. Check it out
HERE.
you are da man!! Thanks!! The problem with me, see, is that I'm a do as I go along kinda guy... hehehe
Really, I appreciate you looking into this... I'm actually studying for my LAST TWO FINALS

so I haven't gotten around to researching it.. I know, I know... I have time to be on GD.COM but no time for research... it's an addiction, remember?!? hahaaaaaa

A Taco Tuesday type of thing sounds great! Are there any duners here is the San Fernando Valley who would be interested in a get together once or twice a month????????
Let me know!
OK, here's some quickie ideas.......
GLAMISDUNES.COM "Duning/Duners?? Against Hunger" <-- need feedback
When to donate: Every gathering (all types)
Taco Tuesdays... must show up with at least one can of food.
Food to be donated:
Canned for the most part.....
Veggies, beans, tuna, pasta packages, mac n cheese we could even donate some candy, oatmeal, cereal, powdered milk, soups, fruits etc... all that is non-perishable. Like the website said... protein food preferred!!
Incentive to bring canned food:
From each "region" we will keep a tally on how many cans each person brought. Then, let's say at the Thankgiving gathering we hook that person up with something real cool... I volunteer to buy something for our areas winner... I guess that's to be decided on.....
Soon, we need to decide where it is that we're going to donate the food to and we need to let them know we're coming!
We could also collect food from our neighbors it that's not too much trouble.
I will start buying some boxes from Home Depot to put the food in.
Sound OK so far??
here are two places that we could donate to....
it'll be up to the group to decide which one.......

Another idea, once you get feedback from Slap, would be to set up boxes at the cooling spot (after getting their permission) and pass out flyers in the surrounding areas telling of the gd.com cause and get people to stop by the cooling spot to toss in a can or two. I think if we do something like this we open more doors as far as getting more people to help donate and instead of this being strictly a gd.com thing we can extend it to being like you said 'duners against hunger sponsored by gd.com and local so cal duners' or something to that effect. We could even set up boxes out side camp..(wash 13.5) and tell people where were going to be and they can stop by at any time to donate. What do you think?

Nicole, I love it! This is exactly what we need... feedback!!

I don't know how big we want this to get, so that's where I'm kinda stuck on ideas... but that sounds really cool!! We could announce now, that we will, in fact, set up signs and have boxes ready for people to donate. I know there are a lot of people who read this board and don't post, and maybe just by knowing that we will be out at G and what we are doing, duners will go to Glamis with some extra items of food to donate... getting this thing out and beyond gd.com is a fantastic idea!!
you da man, Nicole!!!!

you know what I mean!! hahaha
I will talk to the guys at the Cooling Spot on October 3rd and maybe even leave boxes there that day.

I know must of ya'll camp at wash 13.5 but my group & another group we are close with all camp on Gecko Road. I'd be willing to have boxes, etc... set up at our camp & let surrounding camps know as well. I already go into other camps that aren't cleaning up their our trash and hand them trash bags so they can pick up after themselves. My husband says that I have B***S the size of Texas. So a food drive box is not a problem.
I am unfamiliar with the Cooling Spot but we are good friends with the GM at Kolbe Cycle Sales in Woodland Hills. I could talk to him about a flyer or something to inform riders that shop there to prepare for Glamis about this.

I think once there are enough people involved things will roll smoothly. Setting up places for collections is probably the first and foremost. Then finding people to haul and store the goods until the drop off date..will probably fall right into play, esp when they know it's for a good cause. If we can use the GD.com logo we can print up some signs to put on the fronts of the boxes so people know just which organization it is that is going to all the work to help people out there and you're right to say that we would be recognized..another way to go is to let the local news papers know whats going on and most or all will be more than happy to run a couple lines in the paper for free if we give them a story..gets it out to more people that way..but like you said..we don't know how big we want this to get. We need feedback from the other members..
Thanks MPB!! The Cooling Spot is down the 78 from Gecko Road right before you get to the Glamis Beach Store and it located in "Glamis Flats". I'm going to talk to the guys at Cycle Parts West, Cycle Products West, and Mission Yamaha to let us put some flyers at their establishments... way to keep the ideas coming!!!

I hate to be the spoiler here, but with the new vendor rules and much higher vendor fees, I highly doubt that the cooling spot will be at G at all.

Sal-what an absolutely great idea!
We have a great food bank here (St Mary's-the world's first food bank-www.smfb.org) that does a lot of good in the Phx. area. I'd be willing to help out over here if we wanted to do a seperate donation in AZ also.
And yes, we could start with the party next Saturday :bounce:
Julie
Hey Julie, that sounds great. The more us duners can give back to the community, the better! If we don't do a separate thing, maybe on the day we donate we can have some sort of GD.COM Christmas party after we donate the food, not only for us to celebrate Christmas with each other, but also to give a little incentive for many of us to show up when we do donate the food... I'm just brainstorming here... Heck, we can even do a little gift exchange at the party... again... JUST BRAINSTORMING..
I'm really glad there's positive feedback flowing back from this... you guys are the best

Sal-
I just signed up as the AZ chapter of Glamis Dunes.com with St Mary's to have a food drive from the 13th-Dec. 20th. I have them delivering 3 boxes (which will each hold 300 lbs of food  ) before Saturday. Hopefully the party Saturday will give us a good start towards getting them filled!
They will also be bringing literature out that I will bring with out to the dunes.

I talked to my husband, Jayson, last night when he got home from Pismo and told him about the Taco Tuesday type thing & he reminded me the we really get together for Friday Night Pizza Night every Friday with some duner friends (I guess I had a Blonde Moment & forgot :roll2: ). Anyway, he said anyone who would like to join us that lives near here is more than Welcome & we'll start doing a canned food drive there locally as well.
We meet at Casa de Pizza on Fallbrook Ave at Saticoy Street in West Hills around 7 or 7:30. We are usually there until about 8:30 or 9pm. Then walk back to our house for a few more cocktails.
Anyone interested let me know! We'd love to see ya! :bounce:

nice...
I need to think of a place that's relatively central to many of us here also... I will try to go hang with you guys one of these Fridays...
For anyone interested in the San Diego Food Bank, here is the registration form to officially sign up with them..

Sal, I think this is an awesome idea. Maybe Nicole and I can get together and take the IE end of this food drive. We can contact Chaparrells as well as some other off road businesses in our areas and set boxes up there. What do ya think Nic, wanna do this together?
