Just a reminder for those who are interested, the ASA will be holding an open board meeting July 14 in San Diego. This meeting will be packed with many different speakers from the government agencies that impact our recreation in Glamis. There will be a chance to ask them questions on issues that may concern you. You do not have to be a member of the ASA to attend, and it is always a very informative event. The meeting will only last about 3 hours, and a picnic lunch is planned for afterwards if you would like to discuss concerns in a less formal setting with either the ASA BOD or the speakers who are able to stay.

We are waiting for confirmation of one more speaker, and will have an agenda published within a few days. In the meantime, here is a recap from our what's new newsletter that has details on the event:

ASA Open BOD meeting in San Diego July 14

The ASA will host an Open Board of Directors Meeting in San Diego July 14th at 9:00 am. The program will include a brief presentation celebrating the 7th anniversary of the ASA and it's efforts to remove the temporary dune closures. We have commitments from the BLM, UDG, California OHMVR Division, and our attorney to provide a brief outline of their recent activities and answer questions from our members. We are working to secure additional speakers for this meeting as well. This meeting will be held at the Bay Club Hotel, 2131 Shelter Island Drive, San Diego (http://www.bayclubhotel.com/ ). Final details will be available on the ASA website as the event draws closer.

Of special interest to those who enjoy the south dunes....the All American Canal project has begun. We will have a representative from the Irrigation District to give an update on this project and take questions.

I hope to see a large GD.com turnout at this meeting, as this is probably the easiest way to see exactly whats going on in our constant struggle to free the dunes.

good to know, thanks Bob.

Will there be any info on the new Hotel/Casino going up near the South Dunes?
Will there be OHV access to and from it?

If there is I sure hope no OHVers are dumb enough to use it. That tribe has lobbied hand in hand with the CBD to try and shut down the dunes. Any money spent there (or at their existing Paradise casinos) is money spent closing the dunes in particular and stopping OHV use in general.

Perhaps now that they see the dune users as an economic benefit to their operation, they'll change their previous position.

"People are looking for getaway possibilities. This will add a new dimension to retirement people ... and the folks using the sand dunes and the river. With the hotel we'll have longer stays, which will be good for the Quechan and the region as well."

It might be time for a change.

No, they're just looking to milk as much as they can out of the very people they'll screw over with the money they make.

Just because they're willing to make money off of dune visitors doesn't mean they won't also continue to fight to get the dunes closed. They're still very in favor of closing more dunes and keeping the temporary closures in place...but that doesn't mean they won't try to milk as much as they can out of the dune users as long as there are dune users.

Heck this tribe is screwing over their own people in the interest of lining the pockets of the tribal leaders. They have no qualms about playing both sides as long as they can make a buck off of it...but in the end that money WILL go towards stopping other forms of recreation.

I'll say it again because it's still 100% accurate. Every dollar spent with this tribe is a dollar that goes towards closing the dunes and desert. If you must stay at a hotel please do so with those who actually support OHV recreation - there are plenty of hotels in Yuma/Brawley that are on our side in the fight and not actively working against us. And if you want to gamble it may be a bit more of a drive but at least the Herbsts are big supporting of keeping land open.

Robbie....That's not specifically on our agenda, I'm not sure if any of the speakers will address that or not. But, certainly a question that can be asked.
