The news is true! The facility is called "South Dunes Operations Center" and is owned by the Bureau of Land Management. The facility will also include inhouse EMT personnel. The site will be located just off the Gray Wells Road exit south of I-8 Highway. This will be a Design/Build project and is scheduled to start construction this summer.

thats funny you say that, I checked into larry's trucks but felt I could build for less, but that never happens, I did follow all of the guide lines on finding the right truck, and ended up up with a great rig, 500hp,1500lbs of torque, with an autoshift , truck will drive itself, I did all of the conversion work myself, regisration, hitch, converters, etc, soon I will build a bed system so i can haul the car on the back for the solo trips, I will post some interior shots, you guys might be amazed at the room inside. and to think I will never have to buy a truck again, this truck has 650,000 miles and is a million mile truck, heck the tires will wrott of before i even put a 100,000 miles on her. thanks for the interest.

Got it from Larry, he does mostly 610 conversions. Roof height is nice, it even with the WW. Nothing like unlimited torque and better gas milage than a regular truck. Had Big Blue out to Glamis last two seasons, probably 12 trips - mostly to wash 13.5. Just watch for the soft spots, ive never come close to getting it stuck.

Its about the same - registered as 'non commercial', it gets treated just like a pickup.

What is the down side to owning the big truck? You can pick up a nice one for way less than the cost of a new dually. Why don't more people go this route more often?

Because they don't listen to good advice and they need that new truck smell.
Romans9
Because they dont look near as cool as they do rolling down the road in their lifted 4x4 with tires overloaded, too small of brakes, not enough G.V.W. and all the bling they can find. 25bangin.gif

Just kidding, most people just dont honestly know anything about class 8 trucks. I have spent alot of time explaining the pros of this type of setup to alot of people. If anyone is considering trying them out let me know, I will be glad to give you all the info I can. I have lots of experience in this area, if it can benefit someone else let me know. PM me if you like, I should be back on the computer next week.
Kraut_n_Rice
For a lot of guys thier tow rig is also the DD.

If they could easily swing a rig like those they probably would in a heartbeat. If I had the dough and a place to park it I know I would. Adds macho points too, right? closeeyes.gif

Probably the same reason allot of people preffer a truck trailer setup over a motorhome, why pay for something that is just going to sit in the driveway most of the year.

Any conformation this jail thing is true?
Who's paying for it?

Also not all of us can afford a daily driver and a tow rig so we have to combine both smile.gif

your right Mike, I just couldnt afford to continually replace f-350 trucks every 2 years the 8 grade just destroys trannies so I now ride a scooter to work so I can allow the truck to sit in my yard 25bangin.gif

Is this "jail" the same thing that's been talked about since 2005? Back then it was called a "visitor center" or the South Dunes Ranger Station.

http://www.glamisdunes.com/invision/index....c=48599&hl=

Here's a nifty little power point presentation on the (then) proposed project

http://www.isdratrt.org/documents/South%20...ng%20062105.ppt

The agenda for the last TRT meeting included a "South Dunes Ranger Station" item (it appears regularly on the agendas). There are no TRT meeting minutes after January 2007 so it's hard to tell what the progress is at this point. As of January 2007 Neil Hamada was saying they were breaking ground "next month" and it sounds like they have.

As for funding, "federal highway dollars" have been mentioned as well as funding with the help of Congressman Bob Filner (some may remember it was Filner, an avid liberal, who publicly blasted (then) Congressman Pombo during a Congressional Field Hearing in San Diego), but I haven't been able to nail anything down and have no idea if the two are somehow related. It's possible that Filner was the one who made the arrangements for the federal highway dollars to funnel to this project or maybe he dug up some extra cash, who knows at this point.

The last budget spreadsheet shown on the ISDRA TRT website is from a year ago.

I'll make a few calls to see what I can dig up.

You are correct, the project was first named "Imperial Sand Dunes Visitors Center" but later the name changed to "South Dunes Operations Center". Last I heard the project was on hold based on some type of building permit. It was my understanding the project was scheduled to be under construction this summer.
