If your talking about the smooth front or ribbed front tires, they actually help out quite a bit. The knobbies rob some of the horsepower through friction loss. The suck at the sand instead of gliding over it like a smooth tire will. I didn't think it would be that big a deal but after riding my banshee once with the knobs on the frint, I switched them back to smoothies. The difference is great enough to notice so it's the smoothies for me in the sand.

Razors are similar to the smoothies but increase your turning ability. The larger tires up front (like 22s) will keep the front floating a bit more on the sand.
Plenty of people use knobbies out there and they dont complain one bit.
