This question is for those people that have had both a flat and a curved windshield, Is one that much better than the other, I do think that the curved one looks much better but does it function any better than a flat one?
Thanks for any info.
HOGDUNER
curved reduces glare
Frog Island
Curved looks more modern. Not many new automobiles with flat glass. Looks dated. IMO
Mike330R
When I was shopping a few people mentioned curved is stronger. Less likely to crack unless you roll smile.gif
pennywise
ford ranger, curved and easy to find
woodster
Curved for sure..Mine is out of a toyota pickup
SAND SEEKER
Pat,
Have had them both curved gives more vision and the sand blows off better if your not leading (witch you would not be used to) Do it once and go with the curved like I didn't do the first time... drinkup.gif

I went with curved on mine, I have been in cars with either, and it makes a huge difference on the glare factor. Ford ranger trucks are where I think most come from these days.

Mines from a Karma Gia. I am shopping for a new one now icon_wink.gif

WHAT'S NEXT?
Do you need to have pre-existing rails or tabs for the windsheild to fit into? How do they mount to the frame of the sandrails? Sorry I dont mean to hi-jack your thread.

Hey Pat, curved all the way, more room for your hands behind the wheel, cost about 3-500.00 more, but worth it. How the hell do i no my cars not built yet. see ya at ssss, ray

Avatar shows you already have a hood and a roof, with a curved glass window those tabs will work. Flat window will have to drill and tap the A pillar or weld a tab down low on the A pillar, use the roof tabs.

I knew that the answer was going to be go for the curved but I have a Mexico trip comming up and I am short on time and I am not sure I want to stay with a windshield all of the time. To do the curved I was going to have to add a full hood on the car (currently only has a 1/2 hood) and the wait time was alot longer. I went to Emil's shop this morning and he had me a flat frame in just a couple hours, already had it measured for glass and the frame is at the powder coaters, all should be done by the end of next week, 500.00 total, a curved set up would have been closer to 2 grand including the new hood and I would still have to have the new hood painted. If I like the idea of a windshield and the car runs ok I may go the full curved route later on. Thanks for all of the input.

got the flat windshield installed, turned out pretty clean, drove it around the block and not sure I am going to like it with all of the front of the car open, no wind directly in my face but a ton of air was swirling around inside the car, will have to see how it works in the sand, I got it just for a mexico run and I dont think it will work in glamis because all that air that was swirling around inside the car will be full of sand. I will use it for Mexico and also give it a try in glamis. Here are a couple pics.

Looks great.

I went to a fabricator last yr to get a windshield and he urged me not to do it because of the swirling sand by the dash and decreased airflow to the radiator.

I went with the helmets instead and love them.
Mike330R
I have the same issue with sand and exhaust fumes from a car in front of me not exiting the car.

I am installing 2 small scoops like deanosaurus has in my roof to hopefully cure this issue.
tomfish1
yea Pat with that half hood you are going to be duct taping some tecate 12 pack holders over that hole in your hood.....LOL.

I have a flat windshield and a full hood and have no cooling issues or sand in the car after a run. beer.gif
duneflyer
the duct tape idea might work but I would have to stick to the coors light cardboard, it is not just my 1/2 hood that is open, my side panels stop short of the front also, new sheet metal is not an option, guess I will just have to stay out front and keep the sun glasses on beer.gif
DATSUN
Pat, where are you headed when you go down to Mexico?

Is that a hard dune run, I dont have a cooling problem either until i have a hard dune run, or run a long stretch pinned out.

Hey Pat,
Emil has the enclosesure plannels for the front of your car. I talked to him at the flats and he said, it would be no problem, to enclose the fron of the car. I the have the windshield in my Alstar, it blows right up your legs. I'm almost done with my motor swap. When that's complete and if I have a dollar left(way over budget), I plan to enclose the fron of the car.

I have a flat windshield and an open front end. I also have an expanded metal floor. no problem with swirling air or cooling problems at all. I do get sand under the dash but it isn't an issue. With the expanded metal floor the sand falls right out..
SAND SEEKER
Pat,
Your car is not fully inclosed so swirling should not be and issue.....
See you at the SSSS...........
Deanasaurus
Swirling wind will be an issue..... It will come in through the hood area and then up in to your face. To get the full effect of a windshield you will need a fully enclosed front end.

Looks great though - should be better than running with out???????

Wrong Deano,
The sand never gets near my sunglasses and there is no swirling in my car with and open front end, Pat will like it...

my car only has a 1/2 hood and also the front (by your feet) is wide open, I have only run up and down the street and there was alot of wind comming up from down low and shooting stright up at my face, I am afraid if I add a bunch of sand to that air I will have a problem, Tom do you have a solid floor or a mesh floor? Mine is solid so there is no place for the air to go, I will know is a week or so if I like it.

I have a mesh floor.... I get little to no wind from the waist up....
Deanasaurus
No need to get testy.... with a windshield and no enclosed front the wind will come through and blow things around.... On the other hand, mine is a calm wind free environment. Once you go to the full hood and enclosed front you will not want to go back - of course that is just my opinion.

I have a mesh floor, I don't recall a bunch of sand swirling around inside the car. I only wear sunglasses. I have the half hood and open front end, just like yours. I hope to enclose the front, in the near future. I had Tom Face do the headers and what a nice job he did. I send you a few pic's when I load them on the computer.

Seeya soon
