My brother in law asked if he needs paddles in Glamis. His friend told him that he goes all the time with no paddles and there is no problem. laugh.gif laugh.gif He has a 400ex. stock nobbies first time out what do you think I should tell him. I want to go dunning and have to wait for him. I really don't know if he will like it cuz of the cost of the paddles the pass and the gas what do you think?
SHOCKER
I got sand sharks on 8 inch douglas for 140 with tax at cycle parts west, good deal, theres no way he didnt have problems without paddles, unless he went through the flats and didnt actually go through the dunes
RRon3
He should be fine on a four stroke like the 400ex with knobbies. Just have him air them down to about 3 lbs.

You don't NEED Paddles, You can go pretty much anywhere without them.

1 of My Bikes (Raptor) I prefer to Dune Without Paddles!
tron
Paddles help someone with less experiance get through the dunes, but once you get up to speed many people prefer not to use them so the can go faster and slide better. I like them, and use them. Without paddles you may have to go faster up a dune, and might not be able to make some really steep hills, but you can always go around them. I wouldn't let paddles get in the way of a trip to Glamis, and take Ride Red suggestion and air them down, but personaly I don't like going below 4 lbs, no scientific data on that, just my preference.
TANK
just let him decide after the trip biggrin.gif
DUNE
You don't need paddle's but after yanking your bike out of the holes you dig you will soon realize that it's better to have them.

If you are an experienced rider and are not racing the hill, you absolutely do not need paddles. Way back when I used to ride a 350x 3 wheeler. At some point I stopped using my paddles and used the stock knobbies because it was more fun. Every now and then I borrowed my buddies stock 250r knobbies, and that was even more fun.
bigbadKTM
go hit up california motorsport center on morena blvd...cheapest deals on paddles anywhere, he makes sure he has the lowest price, really nice guy too. but when i ran the 250r 3 wheeler, it was paddles or stay at home. just so much easier with the paddles, and sure beats going around everything.
c-diddy
rockymountainatv.com has them cheap.it made a big difference on my girlfriends warrior.hills she couldnt make it up with knobbies were made up with paddles.
Manuel Raptor
So what should I tell him?
tron
Tell him to use the money to buy a keg, and invite everyone here to your campsite! Can we get a consensus on this one folks?

I agree with shocker go with sand sharks I had them on my 400 and they worked great.
Kevin
not a neccesity, but they definatly help
flashpoint
I disagree. If he is riding a Raptor or a 400ex he will not need paddles. They dont help they actually take away from the performance of the bike. I rode a Raptor for a year without them, I put a friends set on to try them out and took them right off. Tell him to save his money!
SAL
let him find out for himself... tell him NOT to get paddles.. hahahahahahahhaahahhahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahhaahhaahhahaahahahahahahahahahah

I rode with this guy a couple of times who would run his
Sand Skates backwards on a Banshee.
He said it provided enough traction
without excessive hook-up.
I don't think hook-up is a problem on a banshee,
but on a four stroke,
maybe running them backward would help with a little tire spin/performance.
I may try this on my trip. (on my 400ex)

Anybody else ever do this?
MWBbanshee
When i first started going to the dunes didn't have paddles so I rentd them. were pretty reasonable maybe 25-30 for the weekend check come of your ma &pa bike shops thats where i rented mine back then.
