If you had unlimited resources, how would you build the ultimate sand quad (general duning...not for drags)?

Discuss models, mods, etc.
Floyd
1000cc Honda motor. Dual Exhaust straight out the back. No less than 20'' of travel and a width of 5ft. Chromoly Frame to. Something like this, but a bit longer and the 5ft width of the arms.

theres actually an article of the PERFECT sand quad in a Dirt Wheels mag i got. its a YFZ450, light as a 2 wheeler, with super powerful?super light parts. titanium frame, stripped of most unneccecary parts.

I would want more ride comfort though... great travel, plush ride, wide, low center of gravity, maybe an ltr with a little more travel and elka elites and a thick booty cushion.
SHOCKER
jaybo made the ultitmate dune bike, but he never gave it to me. go figure, haha
PHIL
It doesnt get any better than a factory bike in my opinion. I'd kill to ride Creamer's KFX......Wimmer's LTR.......Natalie's TRX.......or Spader's YFZ out in Glamis. If $$ was not an issue i'd hand over my bike and a blank check to one of those race teams.

Ultimate eh? Powerplant is first. Probobly a ported KX500 powervalved engine. It would still be super reliable but make in the neighborhood of 70HP and have plenty of torque to lug up the hills. An optional powerplant would be an XR650 or one of the four stroke snow mobile engines making rediculous power. An exaust with a semi quiet muffler will be needed. I'm past thinking that noise = horsepower.

Frame- Titanium would be prefferred for weight savings but an all aluminum frame would be just fine. Something that could use existing banshee,250R, 450 plastics.

Suspension- Wide and long travel, suspension would be designed around the current 450's (Which were designed around the 250R) with long travel but a lowered ride highth to keep the center of gravity low. Something like that Dean Sundahl framed banshee above but alot less ride highth. The swingarm would be long enoigh to keep from doing unintended wheelies but short enough to handle well.

Tires- Skat trak haulers in the rear, mohawks in the front. This is the best combo I have found. Sand skate 2's would handle better in the corners but the 8 paddle design would just spin with the big motor I want.

Lighting- 2 HID's on the bike, a spot and a flood and possibly one on the helmet, like a nightrider.

Ignition- Switchable maps via a handlebar mounted switch to go from drag map to duning map, etc. Electric start would be mandatory also.

Cooling and fueling- Large aluminum radiators and a 3 gallon plus gas tank for those long and hot summer nightrides.

That about does it. I don't want much and what I've listed is all readily available, infact some here on the board have very similiar bikes.

For me it would be changing out the shocks on my 05 Raptor to the best Elka has to offer and adding a steering stabilizer, everything else that I want has been done, axle, LT front, HID's, pipe/intake, Trail Tech bars/computer.
It may not be a new 700 or have cubic dollars in the motor but it's still awesome in the dunes.

ultimate dune quad...... One that is there ready for me to ride, doesnt break down. can always go the distance on fuel. looks as good as it runs. obviously has to be competitive with the factory style quads. yes the 600cc street bike motors are great and all, but I dont want to be doing 100mph on a quad. Ive done pretty close to that on the lake bed and its a little hairy.. I dont plan on racing rails.. any guad can be the perfect dune quad, but the more important part is having the perfect dunes to ride. which is only in summertime, so it has to have a couple nice lights on it. Its great having "the perfect quad" but being with the right group of friends, having a nice trailer to stay in, beats having the perfect quad, so the perfect quad for me is, well my own.
BUT!
I wouldnt mind Bill Ballance's 450... smile.gif
Orange_R
I built mine... don't know that I would want to change very much icon_biggrin.gif
richard cheese
DS 650 reinforced frame...+10in swing arm and a turbo busa in that ma facka

A perfect quad for you is one that you can stay on. icon_wink.gif

custom 250r frame with a ktm 525 motor. Full lt suspension, 2 hids on a removable light bar, 10 paddle 20 or 21" on 8" hyper beadlocks and front stars 9on 10" hyper beadlocks. Color scheme would have to be either orange plastics and black frame or metallics orange frame and black/silver plastics. All the other goodies you can think of.

True, but you'd still be 100 hp shy.

And nowhere near the wow factor of a DSXR 1000.
HA2
a mildly built 450 with long travel suspension would safice for me.
richard cheese
ill take that busa ds over the 1000 gixxer any day
TheLatinLover
Anything but a Honda.
raptordevil
700 Raptor +2 A-arms w/ LT, TCS shocks, Velvet seat, Fast Bars, steering stablizer, +2 swingarm, IMS desert tank, widen axle, HID lights and whatever goodies to make you look fast.

I'm right there with you. Some is good, more is better, and too much is just right.

Btw, which busa ds are you referring to? I've seen a couple one-offs, but nothing actually being marketed like the DSXR 1000. I know the Busa makes around 180 hp stock, and 200 hp with a few mods, and I believe the GSXR 1000 motor is making around 160 hp stock.

anytime you want one of the golden west riders quads, just let me know. i have access to all of those bikes. they turn em over at least once a year, and youll be suprised at the price!!!

id like to see a KFX700, lightend up big time, with some serious suspension, and some minor mods to the motor. now that would be a fun quad in the dunes!!!!!!

Joe, Let's do mine
RideSand
Mikes 330R. Oh how I secretly long for that thing....
nosocks
YFZ titanium chassis with a Bombardier 800 V-twin ported, polished and running on 110. Widen the bike by 6 inches with ZPS. +2 swinger.

Sounds about right to me...
esquared
If I had unlimited funds to blow I would start with the engine in the photo , 300 hp and 425 foot pounds of torque . I would build around it . It would be a little slow off the line but once it gets moving look out .
banshee380
the ultimate wuad?

i would say an ls2 twin turbo in a banshee frame
blackmagic250R
421 Cheetah Pv motor in a Roll Design Frame with 250R geometry, around 120 to the ground, 14 inches of travel front and rear, and all weighing in at about 310..... sounds good to me

this is about how im going to build my 700 up in the next couple of years. the only thing you cant get is a desert tank because they dont make them and dont plan on making them from what ive herd.

i would mop all yer azzez up with this at the hill, and NOT have to trailer it back to camp, but lead the dune ride back

Fast it may be........but you have to admit that thing is FUGLY as all hell........and I bet i doesnt turn any better than the Exxon Valdez did.
Timmay
I think he said "ultimate sand quad"....not fastest quad ever.
Most of these descriptions seem like the ultimate death trap to me.

Going straight up a hill just doesn't seem fun to me.
