Im old school. Im happy going off-roading knowing there is nobody but me, and my group, to help out if something goes wrong. I don't need someone to sue, and i dont need someone to look after me. Thats the point of the desert to me, being alone with a campfire, good friends and stars out at night.

Whats your flavor??

I agree, but I would also like it be about 75% less people...........but that is not possible
Duneroller
Chose no fees, no services, but I don't think the no law enforcement thing is a good idea either.

I wish it could be like that again Joe. Just a few people enjoying duning, preserving nature, listening to the coyotes howl and watching the eagles soar.

But it's over crowded and going to get worse. The LE presence comes with the territory. With more idiots and higher pop. density comes more need to enforce the laws. Sad, but true.
richard cheese
there needs to be an OVERPRESENCE of LEO's, if I may opine?

I honestly wouldnt mind if they raised the fees way up to drive out the riff-raff. If they charged say $500 a year instead of $90 it would cut down on all the idiots out there causing the problems. But make that money go right back into the dunes....not the governments pocket

I don't mind the LE presence. I've seen a few incidents that I was thankful to have an LE presence. Get an angry mob around some drunk fool that just hit someone and things can get ugly real fast. There has to be some law and order out there. There would be so much more pandemonium out there ... I feel like some of the riff-raff gets kept at bay.

I don't mind paying the fees, as long as they go back into our dunes.

We're all very lucky to have a group like this that cares so much about Glamis. I wish the same thing would happen for other riding areas.

I’d love it that way too but there is way to many idiots out there now. Glamis has gotten way to popular not to have law enforcement.

While I dig duning, for the times you mentioned rivermobster, the Desert is where it's at ( as for no crowds). I'll take dune riding over hard pack but with the increasing crowds, Parker rides from Earp are great. I took the quad out last Fri. night from my river pad at midnight, clear full moon sky, no wind, mid 60's and no one in sight other than my buddies rail. Great times!
NODNARB
Voted for #1...no nuthin'

Primitive camping, to me, is what it's all about...I go to the desert just as much to ride as I do to get back to nature, and away from the daily grind. Back in time, almost. Back to survival, and knowing that the only thing you can count on out there is yourself and your group.

I think If all the services just disappeared one day, a lot of the non-duner types would also disappear.

By the way: higher fees for PUBLIC land access is rediculous. Money (or lack thereof) does not equal common sense, or responsibility.
what hurts?
I love the idea of going back to the old days when there was no fees.
The days when you could camp at wash 2 and it wasn't even full.
The days when you could ride anywhere you wanted

Unfortunately I have watched all of that change. We have a fee, I now camp at wash 16 and it is time to go deeper, we are restricted to ride in a smaller area.
I believe law enforcement is needed in the dunes, it's a simple fact there are too many idiots out there now. Look at all of the trash, flatlanders racing through camps, thugs at the hill looking for trouble. It's just the world we live in now and unfortunately Glamis is not exempt.

#1 is a fantasy
#2 is reality
#3 may be in the near future

Remember camping at Olgilby the first year the fee's went into affect, Before you had to pay to camp at Olgilby that is. We arrived on Thurday eve to find nobody anywhere near the tower or on that side of the dunes for that matter. The only truck we saw that weekend was a BP Blazer with the spotlight mounted to the running board, It was kind of spooky out there all by ourselve's and see that truck running around searching the bush's like they were. For the next 2 days we did not see one other person anywhere but at the base of Patton or enroute to Patton we never crossed path's with another group it was as close to what a summer night ride is now but in Jan or Feb. That is still one of my fondest memory's in the dunes. To have that back would be pricless. A better question would be what would you do in order to get that back ?

I agree with you. Too many people these days squished into to small of an area (thanks envirowackos) to do without the law and EMT's. So I guess they have to get their pay from somewhere. dunno.gif

In '96 or '97 (Labor Day w/e) I went for night rides and camped on the flats. There were a dozen others there, but because of the desolation, we all felt like part of a loose group. It was really cool. I won't forget that for a long time.

I also like the desolation and quiet of the desert/dunes. But G is not that anymore. But I still like Glamis. It is an internal tension that probably is a good thing because Glamis belongs to US.

Glamis is OUR desert.
LEO presence or no LEO presence, we need to take it on ourselves to speak up to fellow duners. If we see something that needs to stop, say something. Sometimes it means taking flack. Sometimes it means getting called an assortment of names. But sometimes people respect us when we remind them of the fact that it is not cool to do things that endanger others, destroy our desert, or our reputation and that we, the common duners are willing to say something about it.

What about families on a limited budget? Having money doesn't make one suddenly altruistic.

That stance doesn't seem to fly here, JET...I've taken that stance & always will take that stance on issues like this. You will get the "if you can't afford $XXX for YYY then you can't afford this sport." reply. Well, isn't that just sh!tty for me, then? just because I can't afford a whole paycheck to buy a pass, I cannot go to the dunes. (public land, remember?)

Yes, a $500 pass will get rid of some of the rif-raf, but only the ones who can't afford it. Look at how much the "rif-raf" crowd spends on their big dumb trucks...you think they can't afford a pass?

the people that will be driven away are the families riding their 185 ATC's & camping in tents or small trailers...you know, the "rif-raf"

If I am reading sarcasm in your post then it looks like you see my point. I guess that doesn't get through to the non riff raff moneyed types. Of course why should it? They're better because of their money.

Yep, the last line is complete sarcasm. (you of all people should see that, which I'm sure you did) hell, we are dragging the 'ol 185 out from the shed this year because we want to go to the dunes and we don't have enough money for the newest neat-o toy. We will be the group out there riding 20+ yr. old toys with big grins on our faces.
