Calif. Board OKs Rule to Limit Emissions
SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) - California's air-pollution board voted to limit emissions from lawn mowers and other gas-powered tools in an anti-smog effort that conflicts with a bill making its way through Congress.
The California Air Resources Board rule, adopted Thursday, requires that by 2007 all small gas- or diesel-powered equipment sold in the state must come with catalysts, improved carburetors and leak-proof fuel tanks and lines.
The state estimates the plan will add about $45 to the price of a lawn mower and will cost the industry about $85 million a year.
California seeks the new restrictions to aid its fight against some of the nation's worst smog. Sen. Dianne Feinstein has said they would cut emissions by 50 tons a day, the equivalent of removing 1.8 million cars from the state's roads.
The plan could face a congressional challenge, however. Legislation passed by a Senate committee would prevent states from regulating lawn-care equipment and any other off-road engines, such as irrigation pumps.
Sen. Christopher Bond, R-Mo., said California's regulation would kill jobs in his state, home to two factories owned by Wisconsin-based engine maker Briggs & Stratton Corp.
Air board chairman Alan Lloyd said the board would strongly defend its rule.
"We're not going to cave in to the political pressure in Washington, D.C," he said.

One of these days, industry is going to all decide at one time to tell CA to
go to hell and quit shipping to CA.
California will have the cleanest air in the world, because no one will ship or build anything for California. We'll be BOYCOTTED back to the stoneage!
As a side note, I actually heard Cruz BustaMecha say that jobs
are not leaving California like Gov. Arnold said. And he added that
our economy in CA is not as bad as everyone is making it out to be. Talk about total denial! I guess that's what political anylist call "The Big Lie". (look it up)

As ussual, feinstein has her head where the sun don't shine. Putting restriction on lawn mowers would be like removing 1.8 million cars from the roads? Yeah, right. What a moron.
