You know what? I've had my silencer for 6 years and never once thought of repacking it. Then I heard you can lose power because of it. Lately, I've noticed a drop off in performance so I bought some packing today ($7.99 at Chapparal). They told me you get the throttle response back. So, I got home, took my silencer apart, and WHOA!!! It's all black and stiff and missing the ENTIRE bottom half. I guess I have NO back pressure on my engine anymore. LOL :dis: Man, can't wait to put the new packing in and the new Power Reeds and see what happens!! ANYONE WANT TO RACE??? LOL

I re-pack mine after every season. It will also quiet it down and make sure you pass the new sound laws

To anyone else thinking of re-packing their silencer, I've heard good things about using steel wool instead of the fiberglass packing. It doesn't burn away like fiberglass so it lasts much longer. I believe stainless steel wool was recommended but I have never seen it in stores.

Ben, take some steelwool and pull it apart a little then strick a match to it. It burns like fireworks, don't know if I would like that up my pipe.

Before you repack that thing , make sure its the newer style packing material, looks like yarn as opposed to roof insulation. Moose makes it and it is 10x better than the old stuff, will make your bike run better and quieter at the same time.

Yeah, I saw that yarn/stringy style stuff, just supposed to last longer, not any performance gain...or so I was told.

Get the packing from HMF. They use the best stuff and says it will last at least two yrs and more like five years.. It's 20 or 30 bones..
