The Astragalus peirsonii--"peirson's milkvetch" that is threatened with extinction due to impacts from off-roaders in the Algodones Dunes is a relative of the Astragalus--a medicinal plant from China.

Astragalus is used for immunity boost
Astragalus membranaceus, a small, bushy plant native to northern China, has been used for centuries in Asia to enhance the immune system.
The first half of its Chinese name, huang qi (yellow leader), comes from the color at the core of its medicinal roots. The latter half stems from the plant's reputed ability to improve energy levels and treat a range of conditions, including cancer, diabetes and respiratory infections.
*
Uses: In the United States, astragalus is sometimes used by people infected with HIV for its purported immune-boosting and antiviral properties. Others take it in attempts to ward off colds and flu.
Dose: One to 30 grams of astragalus powder in pill or capsule form, or two to four cups of tea per day.
Precautions: Not much is known about the safety or potential side effects of the plant because it has not been well-studied in rigorous clinical trials.
Research: Most of the evidence on the medicinal properties of astragalus comes from lab and animal testing conducted in China. The plant has received little scientific attention in this country; however, results from a few clinical trials suggest that it may improve immune functioning in patients with cancer and other chronic diseases. Does it make sense to allow this plant to go extinct when we know so little about it and this evidence points to possibilities of its use as medicine?

uh huh... and the labs will grow it artificially, in controlled conditions. then inject it into lab monkeys, previously infected with AIDS... and maybe market it if there's enough $$$ in it.

Maybe its milvetch is ALLEDGEDLY going extinct because you Enviro nuts are picking it for medicinal studies. Go ahead Blue. Go after the medical fields and tell them they are wrong for studying it and putting it in lab animals. Better yet. Why dont you sign up to be a lab rat!

Not that Blu would intentionally mislead the reader, but this topic's title is referring to a plant in China, NOT the plant he mentions that exists in the California desert.
This is very fortunate, of course. Since the Astragalus Peirsonii is endangered, it would be illegal to harvest it for medicinal purposes.
Finally, there is no evidence beyond Blu's assertion that the Astragalus peirsonii is:
a)Threatened with extinction;
b)Harmed by off-roaders

now your talking out your a$$, Chum. Why don't you talk about what you would do. You can't say what I would do, ya dig?
You haven't been paying attention to the reasons why greenies want to protect endangered plants and animals. If there's a chance that the PMV could cure cancer, we should grow it and experiment with it.
However, if it's extinct, we can't.

Anyone who actually gives a damn about this particular little plant and/or this issue (as opposed to just lurking around trying to stir up anger) knows that farming and harvesting the PMV has been offered MANY times in response to the lawsuit. It has been steadfastly refused.
Why? Because (say it with me now) IT'S NOT ABOUT THE SPECIES.
But just so that vacuum in your head rests easy, be assured that experiments have been conducted by the opposition. According to testimony, they have intentionally run over the plant with all types of vehicles and tires, even tromping on them with their little feet, all in the name of science, oh my.
Now... go back under the bridge and leave these nice people alone.

Exactly. Once again, when science, logic and reason fails, the anti-access gang, including our resident Troll, must rely on slight of hand and lies.
Since the Astragalus Peirsonii is endangered, it would be illegal to harvest it for medicinal purposes.
A minor point but important in the near future... it's only listed as "threatened" not endangered, and you're right, either way it is illegal to harvest.

Once again you're absolutely right.

Well, if you're so afraid it's gonna go extinct, why don't you grow it NOW???
Pull some of those plants out that you have growing under your grow lights and plant some PMV! Woo Hoo ... I wonder if it rolls up as nicely?
Guess what? It's not going extinct. It isn't even threatened. It's all a load of crap. And everytime the green movement throws another of these unscientific theories out there it causes more and more distrust.
Stick with valid science. Quit trying to make the science fit your agenda and then maybe, MAYBE we'll give ya a listen.

guess what? The CBD et al relied on the BLM's own science to institute demands to protect the species in question.
Then along comes the ASA and Dr. Phillips...
We KNOW what their agenda is

What exactly is Dr. Phillips "agenda"? Do you really think that the PMV study was faked?! I don't think that the ASA is so rich and powerfull (unlike some enviromental orgs) that they could influence a scientific study. Face it, The PMV is not threatened or is it endangered. It is just another of many tactics the GAG's are using to try and control our public lands.

Anyone who believes that protecting species can lead to medical breakthroughs should really do a web search on Taxol. It IS a cure for cancer that comes from a tree that IS considered endangered.
And while "environmentalists" love to tout it as proof that species need to be preserved in case they do turn out to be "a cure for cancer" when it actually did happen the tried like heck to keep any research from happening on the tree - even when that research was directed at finding a way to produce taxol without relying on the endangered Yew Tree that it came from.
Two years ago a search for "Taxol and yew" found quite a few reports about the "Save humans or save trees" aspect of the fight. Today you tend to get a a LOT of eco sites touting Taxol as proof that preservation works (convientantly leaving out their attempts to block development of it) with the truth still out there though much harder to find under all the spin.

When the study was conducted didn't a grennie have to verify every plant counted?

I did the search suggested by Jason and came up with this interesting essay about the yew tree in CA.
http://www.colostate.edu/Depts/Entomology/..._1996/hill.html
They found that the bark of a 100 foot tree would treat one cancer patient for one day, so they started cutting down all the yew trees.
They didn't consider what would happen when they cut them all down.

The problem here is "blueper" only has one VCR tape : Medicine man , he watches this tape over and over again and is convinced this is the "cure all" to the worlds problems!. No cutting down trees!, The secret "cure all" formula will be lost forever!. After all once that "cure all" formula is created, wars and terrorisum will go away, all cancers, aids and sickness will dissapeer and all he will have left is the same old fight that he started with!!. This is "our land "!!! Science is awsome!!.
