Full Version: Went From Type 1 Trans To 002 Bus

ok, guys here's the deal i junked the type one trans for an 002 (3rib) this was a swing axle buggy before so, i bought an irs tube with the irs pivot points, welded that in the place of the old swing axle set up. The question is what do i do about the axles i have the stock type 1 trailing arms and stub axles and the 002 flanges on trans. What do i do to make it go with these parts? i've heard rumor of using thing stub axles? i have heard that you can run 2x3 and stock lenth type 2 axles? but what stubs? if the 2x3 thing has any truth to it i like the idea just for easy parts replacement. i know there are kits out there that are 3x3 with 930 for a grand not really looking to spend that much and don't want to go to much wider than what it is now. what do ya think i know i'm not reinventing the wheel on this one. so whos got the 411 on this. Thanks again my dune riding would be a lot less fun with out this forum.

I did the same thing on my sand toys 4 seater. You can use type 2 cv's for the 002 trans and type 1 cv's for the type 1 stub axle. You can pick up an axle at Pacific Customs that goes with this set up.

The type one stub axles are the only thing that you have to change. there are type 1 stubs with a type 2 flange available and they are cheap and should fit with the existing bearings and drums. or you can go with 930's flanges, stubs and all but that is $$$. The bus stubs are the same (flange)as the 002's and sway a way makes an axle that fits with the stock length trailing arms and the bus trans and bus cv's, i think it is around 200$ for the pair, i dont remember the length, but they are available. for about 300$ the whole set-up will be in the dunes and will all be type 2 with no weak type 1 cv's to break and no axles with two different sized splines to try and find. hope this helps

tchenery is right on, clearance the cv's and you can get about 8" of travel if I remember right, You can go to 2x3 or 3x3 arms as well for a bigger budget, Don

all good stuff guys thanks a ton i'll give pacific customs a call in the morning that should be able to hook me up with the right parts,

but 8" of travel thats just not enough. is that with the stock shocks and stops in place? i've got a set of 16 fox air shocks and 16" fox 2.0 to go back there and no torsions . i should be pulling more than 8inches RIght ???? i was hoping for something in the 12 range or is cv bind going to kill my dreams?

i'm no expert, but i don't think you can get that kind of travel unless you go to at least a 3x3 arm.

That's true, for more than that, you'll need at least 3x3 arms and 930 CV's. I did it to my last buggy and got 18" of travel, with 15" of it being useable laugh1.gif

Remove the torsions and go with the coilover adapters, they work awesome thumb.gif

8" to 10" travel is about all you'll get without 3x3's. With that said, I noticed a big difference in the ride, once I went with IRS. My new beam car has 3x3's, coil overs and the coil over adapter, I was told I should get between 16" to 18". Good Luck!

I have a 002 in my buggy with stock size arms. I used thing stubs and type4 CV's, the axles are shorter than the type1 because the bus trans is wider. Now days the cost to go 930 is not much more than using bus CV's if your buying all the parts at one time, not sure if you can get 930 axles short enough to work with the stock arms.
