Full Version: Litter Fines At The Hills

wife.gif I know we are all sick of "THE MAN" slapping fines or taxes on us every time we turn around. But would it be a good deterrent for those Jack-@$$es who dump their bottles and cans by the truck loads at OLDS or other popular party hills. It pisses me off that these guys show up and leave their crap behind, I have no problems with people having a good time, but if you can pack it in --- pack it out!!!

Maybe a few $1000 littering fines would get these guys thinking before , say, the Sand Sluts Truck takes off and dumps about 50 cans out the back of their rig. Or maybe the local news stations filming the aftermath on Sunday will be fuel enough for the authorities to close ALL night gathering spots. Remember Comp. Hill.

Just my two cents..... angryfire.gif

I think it would be GREAT for them to start passing out littering tickets. i think you're preaching to the choir on this board though. I do not think it's a good idea to get the newsfolks involved, though, because that's just more bad publicity that we don't need.
BaBaBouy
I think the LEO's are currently booked up introducing themselves at our camps.
Simalg
I can't stand all the trash at the hill and out in the dunes. We usually pick up a few cans / trash when we are hanging out there and put them in our coolers. I've always said, "If you had a way to get it out to the hill, then you have a way to take it back to camp!"
raptordevil
Now don't start yelling at me, cause I think littering sucks. But I have been out with friends who I have caught trying to bury their cans and I asked them why? They said cause their worried about being pulled over and have the cooler checked and have empties in their cooler. I get what their saying so I told them to bring a bag and put them in there and if asked say you were picking up someone elses trash. I personally don't drink until I park the bikes at night, but we all know of friends who drink some while riding not that they are drunk but enjoy a cold one on a break.
HozaykwAIRvo
There is no acceptable reason to litter at the hils, in camp, or in the dunes.

I'll personally thank each LEO that writes a legitimate $1,000 litter ticket at the hill with a crisp $20.. I'm tired of picking up everyone else's s***
APHANTOMDUCK
I had a customer (just yesterday) that was complaining about trash left outside the trash bins near Wash Road.

I'm wondering who has the responsibility to empty the bins in a timely manner so that the trash is not stacked up when full.
NMERIDER
Crush your cans when done and put them back in your cooler. They are no longer containers. your just collecting cans!

I hope no one does start yelling at you because this is actually a pretty common response. There are a lot of people who are worried about getting an "open container" charge when transporting empties and so instead they leave them behind. This will be even worse if and when 'they' implement a dune-wide alcohol ban.

About the best anyone can do is make sure the container is no longer a container. Crush the empty down as far as possible, put it in a trash back and then inside your cooler and hope that whoever stops you reads the intent of the law and not the letter of the law.

I can understand about the beer cans and not wanting to get popped for open container, but the whole trash thing cracks me up... People bring it to the dunes but they don't want to take it home with them.... WTF bugsy2.gif just plain lazy I guess. Personally I never leave any trash in G. I double bag all my trash so it doesn't stink up the trailer and drive right by the dumpsters that are overflowing, shake my head and wonder why they just couldn't take it home. It's one more thing we all have to pay for. Anyone know how much one of those dumpsters cost a month...? And how many do they have for the dunes.
loddollar
Maybe some of these guys would toss their empties in a bag if big breasted bunnies were holding them. 25cheers.gif I was wondering why the trash bins were overflowing too... As I passed them up with my own garbage to take home.
APHANTOMDUCK
I was raised (and still subscribe) to the theory that if you visit public lands, you pack out your trash back home.

Less impact to the lands and the agency.

Since when is it acceptable to leave your trash for others to take to the dump. wife.gif

Don't worry I do. And if I think they have had too much to drink I take their keys out of their bikes and hide them. One of my rules to riding or camping with me. So far nobody has gotten mad at me when they can't find their keys and realize it was me that took them. They figure if I took their keys and they didn't notice then they were drinking too much.
SailAway
Hey now, he didn't say anything about driving drunk. He was talking about having a cold one while out in the dunes. Like maybe during a lunch break or sitting high on a dune watching a sunset.

Having a drink is not against the law. Driving while drunk is.

And there's a huge difference between the two.

I do the same except I grab food out of horizontally challenged people's hands when I think they've had too much to eat.
PS. I piss on my keys on a regular basis, have at it.

I camped at Ogilby last weekend and I can't figure out why there aren't any dumpsters there. Part of the fees we pay for passes is supposed to be paying for those dumpsters. I think the trash thing has gotten better since they added the dumpsters, now they just need more of them. This hasn't stopped all the cans / trash out in the dunes and at the hill, but it's improved the camping areas.

$400,000 of YOUR fees went towards the dumpsters last season... so I'm assuming it is at least that much for this season.

That is roughly 13.3% of your total fee dollars... keeping in mind that 30% comes off the top to the ICSO for selling and enforcing passes... after you remove another 13.3% for "coyote and raven proof" dumpsters we have 66.7% left to operate on. dunno.gif

Wow,

$400,000 for a Trash service that is basically only in operation from Oct - Apr easch year.

And they still over flow.....

Get cought littering and it should be $500 and 8 hours Dune community service, In other words pay the court and spend all day on a saturday picking up trash at the hill wearing black and white pinstripes so every body knows what a pig you are.

That is correct... ~$55k a month if ya look at it for 7 or 8 months of the year dunno.gif

It is about 4x as expensive as the huge troughs they had before... which are not "coyote and raven proof".

Get informed, know where YOUR fee dollars are going...and if ya don't know, contact these guys http://isdratrt.org thumb.gif

Every now and then someone tries to push dumpsters at Dumont... and the Dumont representatives push back, using Glamis as an example of what NOT to start.

The logistics and environment headaches aside, Dumont's remote location would increase the amount for this "luxury" considerably.

No thanks.

GREAT idea and I think everybody would support it 100%. The problem is when there is a mass of humanity, not to mention darkness, it's very difficult to catch people in the actual act of littering. Just like somebody else posted about thier own friends burying the trash in the sand so they don't get caught with the empties.

The other issue is the judges down the line. You can slap any fine you want on a violation but if they fight it, 98% of all fines are determined by what mood the judge is in. Just as an *example* only, a glass bottle ticket in San Diego is $200 when you get the fine thru the mail. If you fight it, the fine doled out by the judge is *usually* $50....the city has to pay me (4) hours OT just to show up so they actually LOSE money when people fight tickets in court.
etc
i agree, there is no excuse.

if someone was sitting in front of your house and threw their empties on your lawn because they "needed to have a cold one" and they didn't want to get caught with open containers, i think we'd all be a little pissed. now if a couple thousand did it over the course of a weekend .................

personally i don't drink much, i don't care if people do it in camp as long as they don't turn into &$^#*#**'s and they pick up their crap. i think a ban on booze out in the dunes is a good idea [out in the dunes, not the camps], won't stop the drunks from driving but at least they might do it less while they are out there.

if your jones'n so bad that you have to drink out there, maybe you should stay in camp. some of us go out to drive in the dunes and don't really want your drunk ass out there. how about sticking to na bevs while you're piloting your 500hp battering ram around the people i care about. dangerous enough out there without beffudled minds trying to make split second decisions, can't tell you how many times i've been thankful that me and the other guy had our wit's about us as we almost collided cresting a dune.

as far as trash .......... you brought it there ......... why don't you have room to take it home ?
