Anyone out there modify thier 450s yet? I'd be curious as to what jet sizes people are running, and who has the best a-arm replacements.
The articles I read say the factory pipe, with the removable baffle is just as good or better than the after market ones - anybody see specs yet?
Anyone buy the kick starter option?
Anyone else notice how the battery sucks?

pull the baffle out, take the airbox lid off and do the cam mod
with these mods you will be plenty happy with your YFZ450

took my 450 to octillo wells and to glamis and had no problems with the battery. had the baffle out and the air box lid off at mother "G" ran like a champ, just alittle pinging going down big hills while coasting. I'm looking to had a complete exhaust system, k&n air filter, and to rejet before the next trip, if wifeey permits, yeah right.......

The battery is small, and if you leave the lights on it has a hard time starting. At least one review said they smoked the battery on the 2nd day. Idling with the lights on the lights dim and brighten with the revs. So far it works, and if anything changes I'll post it here. From my understanding there is also a kick-start option for it.

I noticed some pinging when hill racing, 1/2 a tank of 110 stopped that....

did you mix the race gas with super, or ran the 110 by itself. used only 1/2 a tank stopped it from pinging.

The YFZ is lean from the factory for Glamis and the load that is applied in the dunes. If using factory jets, even a stock bike needs a 168 main and a 45 pilot to run correctly. If you are pulling the baffle and running with no lid on the factory main you are seriously risking it. A 168-172 main is fine for a YFZ with the basic mods of the timing mod, baffle out and the lid off. 45 pilot is just about perfect in the three YFZ's we have done that ride at Glamis. We have found that all three bikes like a different needle postion on the factory needle, but all three are now are running stock needle position at Glamis.

with your air box lid off, baffle out, use 45 pilot, the 168 mainjet, put the needle on clip #4 or #5, and put the airscrew on 1.5 turns

here is an excellent website for jetting, cam mods, and checking valves, etc. for the YFZ450.

A friend of mine bought a YFZ450 in the middle of July for a trip to the Idaho sand dunes. After the first two days, we had to push start it. We put a charger on it the next day, which didn't help at all. After he got it home, the dealer did warranty the battery.
So, I think the kick start kit would be a good idea.

To my understanding it advances the timing closer to the YZ specs= more hp.

does it make a big difference? is re-jetting needed? seems like it isnt hard to do, so that might be something to do until I get the pipe for it
thanks

Racing my sons stock YFZ450, with stock tires, he beat a built DS 650 and a built Predator that both had paddles up the wall at Dumont.
The piped, jetted and paddled YFZ 450s were astoundingly faster still.
But,, my main like of the YFZ 450 is the fun to ride handling.
The local shops here are jetting 5 sizes up with some complaints of a slight hesitation off of idle.
For this reason I'm going to just observe for a spell and see what you guys finally decide on for jetting. Perhaps 5 sizes up is too much.. DAMFINO.
One thing I know for sure, if you stop for more than 30 seconds, shut off the motor. They heat up fast.
And, when ya tie/strap the quad to you rig,,, don't strap it by it by its A arms,, you'll bend them if too tight.
