I was wondering if there were any "Friends of Bill W." that camped in Glamis that could help out during the week of Thanksgiving while we are all away from our home towns and support groups. If you have heard of Bill W., then you know what I'm talking about. Please respond if you do!

Welcome to the board. He and I have had an on-off friendship for the last year. There are a few others on here but the majority of the people on here and in G don't know him. I don't know of a camp where his friends make out the majority. But, just do what you've got to do for you. I personally have gotten great inspiration from another board member on here that definatly helped me improve my life. You're not alone.

Check your PM. Friends of Bill don't post about it much but you can find them everywhere. After reading the PM I'm sure you'll understand.

Alcoholics Anonymous? Not like it's some big secret.
I know there's a lot of guys that preach against drinking here. Shouldn't be hard to find them.
Just make a topic about drinking in the desert and they'll all come out to shake fingers.

Actually, you lumped yourself into a certain group by believing I was talking to you. You took my unspecific statement and took it personal. So....spool up, turbo.

I guess I forgot about the secret code words that makes everything "anonymous"

one of the main goals of AA is to remain discrete and out of the public view (like newspapers...messaging boards). dood was just following the practice of aa as well as everyone else here. its hard to understand Bansh88, but no one is trying to create mystery or being secretive. just go to a few meetings or read "the book" and you will understand. and its not about stopping people from drinking. its about helping yourself through the help of others...who in turn need help as well. AA is not an "organization"

I've been to mettings.
If I felt alcohol was a problem in my life, I would not feel the need to be anonymous in my need for help.
Posting the fact that you're a "friend of Bill W." is hardly being discrete

true... i dont understand that whole aspect of it. but it works for them. im just sayin what i took from the couple of meetings i went to. i could just tell that the origionater of the post didn't want this to turn into a big deal. just looking for someone to camp with to help him out. ....and maybe he didnt want people to know he went to aa so he said it in a way he felt others who are in his situation could understand while maintaining his privacy...guess if that is the case it didnt work.

My Mom has been a "friend of Bill W" for 30 + years now. She is one that will stand on the highest mountain and shout it out. However, she has friends who are not so open about it.
The idea of "anonymous" is that if a person wnats you to know about it they'll tell you themselves or discuss it openly.
It isn't up to anyone else to tell the world for them about their addiction to alcohol. Some are ashamed and would prefer no one ever know. Others are proud they kicked it, like my Mom and they will tell you all about it

if you are not careful.

It is being discrete...Until I looked it up on Google, I didn't know what it meant. You're lucky that you have enough self confidence to admit it if you had a problem with a substance that too many people would look down on you for. Not everyone does, so if this works for them, then what's the big deal?
