Full Version: Proper Clutch Adjustment On S4

I recently had my tranny rebuilt - ring and pinion on a S4 (one season on tranny). The mechanic that pulled the tranny and put it back in did not adjust my clutch, so I did. However, I have read a post on this board which someone had some problems because their clutch did not have the right adjustment.

When I adjusted the clutch I simply took some "slack" out of the slave cylinder until the transmission completely disengaged. Any advice on whether this is ok would be appreciated and if not how do I go about ensuring that it is properly adjusted.

BTW I have had one trip on the car since the transmission was put in and had no problems - no strange noises etc. Everything seemed to be OK. Also, I usually use the clutch when shifting. Thanks in advance for the advice.

There needs to be about 1/16th inch play on your slave cylinder set up.... if it is too tight it will ride the clutch and you will not even feel it.
Make sure you completely bleed the system and leave a little play...

We would recomend 1/2'' to 3/4'' at the pedal. And the most important is to make sure the clutch disengages all the way. Also we recommend that there be a clutch pedal stop that is adjustable, it helps not having to throw the pedal beyond what it needs.
