Hi ATC70 friends,

I just traded off one of my Trail 70s for a pretty nice ATC70 that won't start. It was missing some of the ignition parts (points, 1 stator coil) and I figured I pull some parts from my currently disassembled '83 to get it running. I ran into a question I can't find the answer to. I know this is a Trail 70 forum, but they're almost the same...

On the '83, there's a pin with a green/red wire connecting to it from the stator assembly. I think it's a ground contact. It's circled in this photo:

The '85 doesn't have this contact pin, the green/white wire, or some of the other wires coming out of the stator. The '83 has the black wire running up to the coil, but also a couple other wires heading up to a white connector. The '85 only has the one black wire running up out of the stator.

I've looked in the manuals and searched the web, but can't seem to figure this one out. What changed in the ignition system in '85?

Thanks,

Dan

The pictures I see are of a CT 70

The CT70 wiring is quite different from a ATC70 as the CT is street legal etc.

The ATC 70 wiring is the same from 83 - 85

The pin you are referring to may be a neutral indicator switch that the ATC 70 had but was never used

Here is a good site for CT 70 info:

That exact photo may be from a CT70... I didn't want to drag out the camera to take a photo of that part when it was easier just to pull one off the 'net. I think I got it from the points thread here on this site. My point is the same, though. I have two ATC engines, and they're different in this one way. That part I circled is on the '83 and not on the '85.

Today I took the stator assembly with the extra green/red wire and put in into the '85. I tucked the wire in a little nook under the case, but it's not hooked up to anything. After some tinkering, I got it to run fairly well. So, although I want to know what this part is for, I really just want the trike to run, and it is now.

I'm thinking that wire and pin must either be for ground or for neutral indication. Either way, it doesn't look like it'll keep me from riding.
