As I am packing and getting ready to head out to Glamis Tuesday I am in disbelief. I have a nine year old as well and I am a bit uneasy heading out on this trip. There have been so many sad outcome this season already. I can't imagine the pain these families are in. My thoughts and prayers are with them.

Looking at your avatar, I can't tell if you really let him drive the Rhino or it's just posed.

I'd just like to point something out to all parents out there. Driving a motorized vehicle is more about the judgement required to operate the vehicle safely than the height needed to reach the pedals.

I've let a 10 yr old kid drive my golf cart, and I was in the seat next to him with my hand right next to the wheel the entire time.

This is a general observation and it's true. There are FAR too many kids driving quads and Rhinos around UNSUPERVISED. I foresee some child safety org getting laws passed that ALL ATVs and UTVs must be driven by a licensed driver over 18. It's only a matter of time and statistics.

Perhaps some safety minded org like Dunesafe can take the lead and start some strong campaigning to get people to think of what they're doing when they let a child drive unsupervised.

Most importantly, my deepest condolences to the families involved and the train conductors for this most tragic incident.

My heart goes out to the family.

Opinions should be allowed as the accident affects EVERYONE at Glamis, like it or not. We are already under the microscope and now we have this accident.

I agree we should be respectfull of thoose involved but questions need to be asked, this took 3 lives, all 3 children in one moment.

Where were the parents ?

RIP Children

We were stopped in this picture, but we just got back from a ride. Always supervised. Miles started driving golf carts at 5 years old. One way to get him to the golf course. I'm a new duner and I'm still finding my way. I've been fortunate enough to have some vets help me. As parents it's our responsibility to teach our kids how to ride and to be safe.

Being that we are new duners we understand the dangers, but bottom line is you don't think it's going to happen to you. Regardless of the situation, these poor families are going to be effected indefinitely.
Stu Padasole
my heart goes out to all involved.

and to respond to where the parents were. It stated above the 16 year old was driving. I am not saying she was experienced with a Rhino, but at 16 you are able to legally drive a car anywhere on the street you want. she should be qualified to drive a Rhino around. This isn't a case of not being able to handle the Rhino, it is a case of a VERY bad mistake.

No matter what the cause, the final outcome will not change. Lets all learn from it, do what we can to help those involved, and try to educate others so it doesn't happen again.
Roaddog
So tragic. I am so sorry for the families.
socaldmax
The worst thing we can have in this lifetime is regrets.

I sincerely hope that we can help people to make decisions that they will not regret in the future. We can all learn from each other's mistakes, and share in each other's pain. My heart aches so badly, I can barely breathe.

RIP.

What a heartwrenching incident, My 3 children are in the same age bracket as the ones involved, My prayers and thoughts go out to the family and all involved, R.I.P. little duners. sandrqd

It's a terrible tragedy, but please don't play the blame game or form a political action committee to get mandatory licensing for all atv riders or other new ridiculous rules and regulations. Accidents happen. It could have just as easily been a sober driver in their 60's. From the way the accident is described, if the driver had started a little earlier she would have made it, and a little later she would have seen the other train passing in front of her. Wrong place--wrong time.

RIP and I am sorry for your loss.

Absolutely heartbreaking.

Does anyone have an update? I keep hearing conflicting stories.

My prayers are with the families...

I remember that moment hearing the news all to well. I just found this thread and Im physically ill now. I am so sad to hear this as well as Im so sad that this season is starting out to be nothing but bad news.

I heard the news last night, a friend who was there told me. The family involved camped with us last season, very nice people Dad is a fireman kids were well behaved and polite. This is a extremely sad and unfortunate accident, others in our group are close to this family thier kids play sports together. I would hope that everyone will have compassion for them during this tragedy. It reminds all of us how precious life is as well as our children. Be safe and pray for the families involved.
VirusBrown
Does anybody have any update information? One of the girls was a former student of mine.
what hurts?
Young lives taken too soon is very sad.
May everyone involved find peace.

Man, that sucks. I dont understand how or why these things happen!! Almost everything we do in life has some kind of risk attached to it, but this just seems wrong.
airkuld
There's at least one inappropriate comment in the beginning of this thread, please have the decency remove it. It's offensive for anyone to read given the circumstances, much less someone connected to these children.

IIRC, I remember reading somewhere that multiple track accidents with one train blocking the view of the oncoming train are the most common type of train collision accidents.

Condolences to the families.

My dad was both of the fathers captain at the stations both worked at and his girlfriends sister is bestfriends with one of the girls aunts or moms.

the 13 year old girl is at the childrens hospital in phoenix her spine is partially severed from her brain stem and things arent looking good.
the 16 year old died on scene and the 9 year old died at a hospital in san diego.

please just keep the family in your thoughts and prayers. keep all the negative comments in your head and dont post them on here.

I know the family involved in this tragedy....There were two 14 year old girls and an 8 year old boy in the Rhino. They waited for a train to pass, but didn't wait for the arms to raise...they went around and were struck by a train headed in the opposite direction. All of which was witnessed by a 12 year old little brother.

One girl died at the scene, the other two (brother & sister) were airlifted to two separate hospitals. The 8-year-old died at the hospital, which was 20 minutes before dad could get there. His 14 year old daughter was taken to Phoenix, where she is being monitored for brain activity improvement for the next 24 hours. It does not look good.

We are all praying for a miracle...Mom, Dad, and their 12 year old son are all together maintaining a vigil for their little girl / older sister.

Glamis has left its scars on all of us, but this one hurts more than anything I broke.

Please remember...this wasn't some dumb drunk trying to show off....these were kids, someone's kids.

Please take care of yourselves and those around you...this really sucks!

I wonder who will get sued first? The railroad, BLM or Yamaha?

so sorry for the loss of young lifes icon_sad.gif may they rest in peace..

QueenGlamis
Well the fence to the 78 did not mean a hill of beans in this situation.

It is a tragic reminder that 1. Make sure you watch your kids out there. Don't trust them to run around unsupervised, whether it be in a Rhino, 70, quad or walking around, ESPECIALLY on big weekends. They are kids, they are super excited to be out there too and sometimes even the most mature and level headed kids don't make good decisions. Hell, there is plenty of proof that even adults don't make good choices. 2. Always respect the train. Even if the gates are up, look both ways before crossing. Even if you have to wait 5 rigs before you can cross the tracks and clear them. DON'T park on them while waiting to turn on Wash Road. 3. Love your little ones each day, even if they drive you nuts sometimes...

Horrible tragedy for everyone involved...
Wicked.Good
Yarder and Jen told us about this while we were at the boat races today. My heart immediately sank. I feel so sorry for the family who last their daughter, and even worse for the family who not only lost their son, but are now wondering if their daughter will survive. There is no worse feeling in the world than what they are going through. I hope that there is an angel helping that little girl fight the fight of her life.

May the children RIP, may god be with the surviving child, and the families, and may the train conductors/engineers find peace within themselves.

My prayers to the families and those close to them. I type this with tears, so sad. I saw the sheriff arrive at Boardmanville. The female that got the news from someone that got out of the sheriff SUV, she knew it was not good. At this point I can only pray that the wounds may somewhat heal for the families involve with this tragedy.

Sad sad way to start a celebratory weekend, went to my uncles funeral yesterday and really didnt need to read this today

May God bless those lost and help those who lost

Our deepest condolences to all that were involved.

This one hits not only close to home, it is home. This family have been friends, fellow campers and former co-workers to our circle for years. Tears are an understatement. Prayers a must!

All I can ask of everyone on this board is for caring thoughts for the family right now. There will be plenty of time for Monday morning quarterbacking, opinions, suggestions and a good debrief...give them some space folks. Too many comments in the last few pages are full of opinion and lack in fact. Even the IV Press quotes the vehicle as being a Jeep...even in tragedy, we can learn. Lets just do it later...

Everyone please just say a prayer and keep them in your thoughts!

Soo Sorry to read this horrible news. Many prayers sent to all involved. So sad. icon_sad.gif Please be careful out the this week

My deepest condolences to all that were involved, I will be out next week and hate to hear about accidents like this...

To the Parents, I will graciously open my home to you if you need to be in Phoenix to support your daughter.
I am very saddened by this tragic news. I will not comment, as I have no idea of what you must be going through. All I can do is offer my prayers, and a place to stay if you need one.
May God be with you.
P.M. me if you need to.

Seriously, 3 of the first 5 comments shouldn't be there in light of what has happened, what if the family reads this thread? They won't get past that garbage.

Mods should delete anyones jokes or "opinions" about this accident considering someone connected to this will most likely end up reading this post or hearing about it.

While my personal view does not agree with some of the comments made, we are not here to censor peoples posts. I've noticed many of our membership have already edited their responses as more info comes in.

To the family and friends of any involved go my deepest condolances.

We were camped at the compound when this tragity happened, I immediately started praying in my head for all involved. We are both so sad for the families and the conductor, our thoughts and prayers are with you all!

We rolled out of camp to head to the drags just as the train came to a stop right in front of our camp. This was one of the most horrifying sights and experiences of my life.

My heart and prayers go out to the families involved.

Wow! Were soo sorry for those involved! I hate to see, or hear about these things happening! It make me so sad that this happened but please!!!, all of you be careful this holliday weekend and look out for your people as well as other in your group! GOD BLESS!

I remember how people in my group used to complain about the conductors blasting their horns as they neared the washes....we would all say they were doing it on purpose just to wake us all up and piss us off. I now know better, and think an incident like this is what they feared the most....

My heart and prayers go out to all involved, I can't imagine loosing one of my kids to an accident and can't imagine what the family's and the conductor must be feeling.

My only condolence to them is this....Jesus loves children, and the ones who have passed are with him now.

It looks like there are several people that know these families personally. I know this is not the best time but in the weeks to come please keep us updated as to what these people need. Hotel rooms, travel expenses, funeral expenses or just a hug. I'm in for whatever and I can assure that I'm not alone. No joke, say the word and the GDunes.com peeps will show our holiday spirit.

No hotel rooms needed, after being in a similar situation, Pipelayer and I open our home to this family. We'll make room.

As Russ and Steph said, we also open our home. I have had 1 child in ICU for 9 days, and my brother was in the hospital for the 1st year of his life, and in and out since then. Please do not to hesitate to ask for any help, even if it is to go out for lunch or dinner. Trust me, staying in the hospital day in and out can drive you crazy after a while. Please let us help in any way we can. This board is many strong, and even more that is big of heart...

Way cool of you. We figured staying in a hotel room close to the hospital would be helpful as well as offering privacy and a place to be alone when needed. Again, have no idea what this must be like but will help out however possible.
