Buddy of mine just called from G. The train is stopped around Wash 8 and there is a Rhino under the front of it. One person was still in the Rhino the other was on the ground next to it. Looked like they were still both living, people were tending to them. No rescue folks were on scene yet when he called around 45 minutes ago.

Not sure if these are one in the same, but the news I received was that indeed there's been a Rhino vs Train. I was told there are fatalities, more young ones... And at 5:30pm the train crossing at the 78 is closed and it's backed up in both directions...
This just cements my feelings of keeping kids away from the tracks. May the families of the deceased find some form of comfort.... I am sure it will take a long time

I am a conductor with Union Pacific Railroad and I go from colton to yuma all the time. It never fails every season someone gets too close to the tracks and gets stuck or someone is just being an idiot messing around on the tracks. I've been through glamis a few times and people would stand on the tracks and throw rocks. Bottom line is STAY THE eff* OFF THE TRACKS! THE TRAIN ALWAYS WINS!

While tragic to say the least I have never understood how anyone gets hit by a train.....truley sad. The train will win every time.

I thought it was a case of two tracks at the 78 and they ended up at 2.5 after being dragged. As for "are there two sets of tracks at the 78?"- I don't know.
Best wishes to everyone involved, that sucks regardless of blame.

Wow, you would think there would be gates at a highway. Especially with all the trains that go through there.

One of my worst days at G was to wake up to see the train stopped and someone putting parts into bio bags.
I only cross at the road, under wash 10, and down at wash 28 (or wherever that other crossing is.)
My condolences and sympathy to the family and friends.

There are gates at the 78 crossing, however, every single time we go over the tracks, I slow WAY DOWN and look both ways. It is not CalTrans or the Trains responsibility to make sure that you do not get ran over by a train in my opinion.

There are gates and they were down. Northbound train was stopped to let southbound train pass. Noprthbound train was blocking about half of the highway, 16 year old female driver went around the gate and was struck by southbound train. Was just told by a ranger all three ended up dieing. 16 and 13 year old girls and a 9 year old boy. 78 is still blocked

Eventually, the family may read this and the blame game from those without first hand knowledge needs to stop!
I am so sorry to hear this news and my thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of those that have passed away. And, also, as mentioned earlier, with the train conductor.

I was at the scene after the accident...one was dead at the scene when I got there. The other two were being worked on feverishly. Helicopter came and did an airlift. Not sure of outcome of other 2 youths. The story from the ranger...kids trying to cross and one train obstructed the view of the second train. A very unfortunate accident. Not sure if the gates were down or not?? So sad to see innocent young lives taken. A definite somber moment! The traing was fully loaded and dragged the rhino to was 2. The rhino actually seemed pretty intact for being drug so long. So sad! My prayers go out to the family.

One of the families involved is from Glendora. The two children that are still fighting for their lives are 14, girl, and 9, boy. Their father is an LA County Fire Fighter. The driver of the Rino was a friend of the kids and did not survive the crash. The 14 year old girl went to a hospital in Yuma and her 9 year brother went to a hospital in San Diego. My prayers go out to both families.

Sad news for sure.
The information on rail safety is out there.
Operation Lifesaver has a lot of good information on rail safety.
Maybe one of the orgs could start including this information in their safety programs. Just a thought.
