This will be a limited use area correct Vicki? The area where you can't use unless you pay extra for a special pass?

The funky green outlined area is the proposed "Adaptive Management Area" and yes, permits will be required in order to ride in there. But at this point in time there has been no decision to charge for the permits.

There is a "conservation awareness" (or something like that) test everyone who applies for a permit will have to take before being given the permit.

There is no system developed for this permit requirement by the way. Some suggestions, like giving the permittees different colored flags in order to more readily identify the permit holder. But that has a problem... do they change the color every week? So if I get my permit on a Wednesday, do I need a new colored flag come Monday? Is it per day? So when you get your permit you get a packet of 7 different colored flags? Every month? Boy, this is so confusing!

The BLM is seeking suggestions on this, by the way.

But don't bother offering suggestions on just where the flags should go... they've heard that enough already

I think this map needs some rework in several areas... for instance, although it reminds us of the temporary closures, it has somehow missed the 25,000 acre camping closure.

I'm having trouble picturing the area you're asking about though. But let me say this... if it was a fee area before, it is still a fee area. There are not supposed to be any no-fee areas in the ISDRA any more.

This "New Fee Boundary" is supposed to show people where they will have to start paying the fees they haven't had to pay before. Has the area you're asking about always required a fee?

Please exuse my ignorance/ confusion on this one...
I have seen 3 or 4 different maps in the past few months regarding the new boundaries. My main question is, can we ride/ camp in the area north of 78 now(white outline: wilderness)? I used to camp out there in the early 90's and loved it.

Off topic: Anyone know how many cleanups are set in stone this year? I'd like to attend as many as possible.

Thanks in advance.

No, the wilderness area is still closed as none of the new legislation/reports/Ramp deal with it in the least. It is "Status Quo" in the wilderness area.

Nick-
The person to ask about the cleanups is Mr. (trash) OBSESSED-he coordinates all the mini-cleanups.

The "big" north dunes cleanup is Saturday, January 17, 2004, at the usual spot (ranger station on Gecko).

And there used to be one in March in the south dunes that was started by Pair-A-Dice and KD Cycle but last I heard they might not be doing it again this year (they were recently told it was going to be done by someone else). The south dunes cleanup started out as just one big gathering of dune-friendly people, a chance to have a lot fun while doing something good for the south dunes... a lot looser than the north dunes cleanup. But the last couple of years it has been different, which is probably why Pair-A-Dice and KD Cycle may not put up a fight to keep it. DUNERS has offered their volunteer help if they change their minds and decide to keep doing it, so keep your fingers crossed. It's a really great excuse for visiting the south dunes and you just can't beat Pair-A-Dice for breakfast :cheese:

There are usually lots of little "mini" cleanups organized by Obsessed (Steve Brooks); you may want to drop him a line for some dates.

The south dunes clean up is still on for March and despite what Vicki says the previous organisers were not "told it was goign to be done by someone else". They have been actively looking for someone to help for the past three years and YumaDuners are stepping up to help take the burdon off Kathy and Lynn. Though getting both of them at the same place at the same time to get all the find print figured out is rather difficult so no official announcement has been made yet.

The reasons PAD and KD are not as interested in continuding with the cleanup are because it's too big of a burdon on them both as far as time and financially. It's still a great chance to have a lot of fun and do something good for the dunes - but as the event has grown it has required more advance planning and neither Kathy nor Lynn have the time or interested to continue to grow the event.

Once A few more meetings have been finished we will be making a big announcement about the south dunes cleanup.

Steve is also working to help get out word about the mini cleanups and there should be some announcements about those as well soon.

Jason, I have stopped and started so many different responses to this but what it comes down to is quite possibly that although our sources of information are the same, somehow the information itself is vastly different. In the end though that's good drama but not good for the dunes.

What really matters is that the south dunes cleanup continues, whether it's organized by Yuma Duners or PAD/KD or ASA or whoever. DUNERS offers their assistance anyway they can to whoever does the cleanup.

Vicki, we do plan on Inviting DUNERS (as well as the ASA, CORVA, ORBA and anyone else who can make it) to take part in the south dunes cleanup - but at this point we haven't said anything because of space limitations that we're trying to work around. Understandably Lynn dosn't want to give up his entire parking lot for booths espically with all the people who show up for the cleanup. So we're trying to work out a way to have room for more organizations present but without overstressing PAD.

Like I said before once a few more meetings are done and things are settled out there will be some announcements...and invitations space permitting.

Thanks for the input everyone. I guess for now I'll just stick to my plan of cleaning up the entrance to a few washes whenever I'm out there and see what comes up in the future.
