2275 VW with bus tranny with type 2 CV's on all. I was in the dunes and heard a loud knocking pulled over and everything on the motor was fine turned car off and rocked it back and forth and the wheels locked up. When I go to move the right side axle it moves about 1/2 inch and the left side where I thought the noise was coming from moved about 1" is this because one axle is longer than the other or is it due to the problem I have. When I go to take off the noise comes back, pulled left axle off and towed the car to camp, and didnt hear anything. Got home and pulled both the CV's on that axle off and they look great end clips still on and everything. When I pulled the axle off I didnt mark what CV that was on the wheel side and what CV was on the tranny side, how big of a deal is it that they go on the right way and is there a way of telling one end of the axle says the axle size and RO? and on the other it doesnt say anything. I was told that using turning breaks can mess up the spider gears is that true and if so is that my problem, since my CV's are fine? Also is one axle longer than the other on VW's with bus trannys I was told that they were just wondering. Any and all help appreciated. Thank you.

I wont be any help to you, just not enough information to diagnose a noise on the computer.
I have had CV joints knock, transmission gear broken, trans mount loose???
I hammer my spider gears with the turn brake and when the trans is sent in they are still in reusable condition.

Lug nuts are tight. It seams like I have to hold it in gear almost, it kinda feels like it was going to pop out of gear. Pulling motor and tranny Monday.

Sounds like the tranny is going out. Especially if you need to hold it in gear.
Good Luck...

Be sure to diagnose where the noise is coming from before you take it apart.
