On Thursday at about 1 or so my girlfriends father sand rail caught fire as he was heading up the hill. Inside the car was her 7 year old cousin.

Jerry Rivers her father was airlifted to Maricopa County Burn Center here in AZ 65% of his body has 2nd and third degree burns on it. They told us he will be in the hospital a minimum of 3 months. He is in the ICU BURN UNIT. He is stable now, but with his age and the burns they are not sure on how it will all turn out.

Her Cousin Chase Rivers is in San Diego at University, burned really bad as well, something like 35% of his body as well. They are fighting right now to save his fingers/hands.

I would like to thank all those who stopped and helped us. Many Emt and nurses jumped right in and helped us. Another group of people even transported some of the kids back to camp for us. I could not believe the amount of help we recieved and quite frankly i dont know what we would have done without a handfull of you folks.

If anyone of you were involved please contact me so that I can thank you in person.

I am so sorry to hear of this accident. I think burns would be one of the worst injuries to deal with. Poor little guy at 7 years old should not have to deal with something so tragic.Lets all hope for a good recovery for the 2 involved. If there is anything you need please post it so we know what we can do to help.
Any word on what caused the fire?

The buggy had a rack on the rear above the engine. Jerry Had an ice chest, Tool bag, and a 5 gallon gas tank. It must have dripped onto the engine and caught fire some place. Thats how it went up so quick. Normally buggy fires are small first (electrical) instead this one went up in a matter of seconds.

If fuel is involved, you can't put them out, none of the Extinguishers we carry is big enough. Last season, we had a buggy in our group that started on fire, it seems the fuel fill hose or something like that came off hitting the whoops at the bottom of Olds, by mid mountain, car was buring like you wouldn't believe it. Within 20 seconds of the first flame, car was destroyed. Passengers were lucky becuase we all had headsets, and let him know immediately he was on fire, if not for that, he might had not been aware of it for another 15 seconds, and could have been the difference of getting burned.

Hello, a couple of friends of mine helped out, and are glad they did. Brain Done (Tucson, Az) pulled the young man out of the burning car, and Russ Yogurst (Pheonix, AZ) brought him and Dad down the hill to the valley. We are all praying for their recovery and please keep us posted on their progress.

HI, I'm the daughter of the older gentleman who was burned in the fire. (i'm writing under my boyfriends log in) I can't thank everyone enough for all their help on the hill that day. It was a pretty scarey site seeing my dad and little cousin go through such a horrible accident. Both of them will have some hard years of recovery. If you'd like updates you can write me an email at Lamyamy27@hotmail.com and I'll add you to the list because I don't typically surf this site. My dad is an amazing man and there are a lot of people wanting to follow his recovery. Chase is an adorable, strong little guy with incredible parents who will help him through this. Once again, I can't thank all of you enough. Thanks to the ladies who helped me keep my neice and little cousin calm during the whole thing and thank you so much for helping us get back to camp. I'm not normally very religious but I ask that you all pray that they both have great hope and determination. I also ask that you pray for their bodies to heal with as minimal pain as possible. Thank you thank you thank you. I can't say it enough.

You dont have to be religious to pray honey... He just ask that we have a relationship with Him...

I'll add the two to my prayer list and encourage you to pray as often as you can...

Jerry is one of the nicest guys you could ever meet. He is still heavily sedated but I'm sure he can still hear us. Prayers go out to Jerry, Chase, and the entire family for the difficult road ahead. Blanca and the Rivers family in Phoenix I really mean this when I say if you need anything please let me know. I live at 60th ave North of Jomax so I am not very far away. Kurtis
