Full Version: ISDRA Road Improvements Update
GlamisDunes.com > Sand Community Issues > Technical Review Team - Your Glamis Fees
LoBuck
Larry Caffey from the BLM sent word to the TRT yesterday (10/16/03) that the Wash Road grading is about finished. They have also graded the Sand highway along the Wash Rd. The EK 35 Dust abatement material is scheduled to be applied on the Wash Rd. Oct. 28th., that's a Tuesday. So it should be complete before Halloween weekend.

Other completed projects include the re-surfacing of Gecko Rd and the Keyhole located at Buttercup.

All of these improvements came from recommendations from the TRT and the money was encumbered from last years budget.
LoBuck
Representatives from the BLM have just informed us that the EK35 dust control material has been applied to the washroad. The dust abatement material extends from Highway 78 to Wash 15, It has taken approximately 3 1/2 years to get the necessary approvals to apply the material.

Dust abatement has become a real problem in the Imperial Valley and there may be County Ordinances in the future that will require this or similar product on many of the traveled dirt roads within the valley.

Greys' Well road needs some help. It was a major Safety Hazard this weekend with Sand Drifts covering over 2/3 of it. DO they ever clear this or are they waiting for an accident first? $90... What a JOKE!
Chummin
Nice they put the dust control on the wash road to 15. Bad that they carved out the whoops and made a sand highway that didnt have the stuff applied.
hate to say it, but then the trucks are pulling trailers and they travel 5 mph they dont kick up the dust. Its the folks hitting 50+ on the new sand highway thats kicking it up.
Also its the peeps hittin top speeds in and out of the washes that cause the dust.

Just an FYI is all. Its nice to travel on the road now at 15 mph with trailer in tow, but it didnt bother me when we had to travel at less then 5.

Costed me 205 this weekend. 2 season passes and one week pass cause we forgot a season pass in the truck when my wife left. sad.gif And still dont have any new dunes open.

dunernr, I will ask for answers and post them when I get them.

Chummin, good comments. I will pass them on.

Quetions to BLM: Greys' Well road needs some help. It was a major Safety Hazard this weekend with Sand Drifts covering over 2/3 of it. DO they ever clear this?

QUOTE (Neil Hamada)
Yes,  we have to clear it every time the wind blows and piles sand on the
road.  I realize that sometimes we don't get out there as quickly as the
visitors would like us to but our budget only allows us to have limited
resources.

I'm sick of hearing about the budget constraints when they keep charging more and more for PUBLIC LANDS!! angryfire.gif angryfire.gif Where is this money going?!!

Where is this money going?!!

That is what the TRT will be looking at. Our next meeting is a conference call on 11/18/03.

Thanks Glenn....

Is it just me or does the BLM(Neil) always have an answer to cover his @ss. This road was this bad on Thursday night and nothing had changed come Sunday afternoon??? Talk about slow response time...

Translation: "We tried to tell you we needed more money, like $180 per season but we settled for $90. No wonder we're short on resources."

I would certainly hope he would have an answer to cover his a$$. He wouldn't be much of a manager if he didn't would he?

In all seriousness, I would be less impressed if he didn't have an answer of some kind.

I will ask about the cost per clearing for Greys Well Road on the conference call. Although my question to dune users would be, how much do you want me to ask the BLM to spend on keeping a road through the dunes completely free of sand?

Having an answer and playing CYA are two different animals.

Sure are...

Glenn, well I have been going to Buttercup since 1990 and have never seen the road that bad! Now it costs me $90 to use the road and camp there!!! So as far as how much $$$ to spend well spend my $90 to clear the road! Sure would hate to see a bad accident and the BLM get sued right?

dunernr, I have been going to Buttercup since the 1970's and have never seen Grey's Well Road so bad with sand drifts that it would cause an accident for those that are aware of their surroundings. I never seen even a section of it impassible with a motorhome. Granted, I didn't see the condition of it when you did.

Like I have said, I am not debating points, just offerring my views. Yours is the only comment I have received about the road condition and I have asked the questions of the BLM and will do so again tomorrow.

Keep in mind that your $90 is not going to get that truck and grader out of the yard in El Centro, to Grey's Well Road, and clear the sand. I have asked the BLM for the average cost of doing this, per occurrance. Hopefully, I will have the answer tomorrow. icon_biggrin.gif

Thanks again for your comments. Keep them coming.
dunernr
Glenn, thanks for listening and truley showing concern. The road was down to almost less than 1 car width and could have caused a major issue/accident. Good luck at the meeting. Remember I was also concerned that there was know one checking for passes at buttercup on Sunday when we left between 12:30 and 1. Compliance will never be increased if this does not change. Buttercup has to be one of the easiest places in the ISDRA to do a enter/exit check so idon't understand why there was know one doing this.

Thanks a agian Glenn...

Good Luck with the conference call.

Glenn, take my comments with a grain of salt. It isn't you that I have lost faith in. icon_cool.gif

I appreciate what you do.
LoBuck
dunernr, I was a dunderhead and forgot to ask more about Grey's Well Road during the TRT call today. I had it written down in front of me too. rolleyes.gif The call ran longer than expected and we went thru a lot of topics. I will find out though. Thanks for giving me some more info!

We did not get a exact location of where and when the Rangers ran compliance checkpoints. The BLM did report that more Central Parking people, BLM Visitor Service Staff, and BLM Ranger were used for compliance over Haloween weekend than ever before.

Any real concrete plans on increasing the camping along Gecko Rd ?

Adding camping spots is actually one of the management actions in the New And Improved RAMP, but it's all tied up in court right now.

Extending Gecko Road (a dream that warms my heart) is another thing altogether. We need to convince the County and then the general public that Glamis is one heck of an asset (yes they know that but are they willing to stick their collective necks out?) and get them to help get some of these things done. Not just for the camping, but to also disperse use a little. Better for the little crawly things and better for the land users. And why not??? There's a whole lotta room out there.

Thanks for the response. I wish common sence was a trait all people had. Mostly our politicians.

It wont be too soon that they add camp sites!!!

Tell me about it! It was way back in the '87 RAMP that they started talking about extending Gecko Road and still here Glamis sits, growing in popularity but not in accommodations.

Thank the anti-access groups for that one. They're "management by closure" style keeps many popular public land areas from expanding. Just look at what's happening to Yosemite -- they're going beyond non-expansion; they're actually reducing camping opportunities, even though the demand continues to grow. It's easier to eliminate opportunities than to come up with conservation-minded solutions.

What we need to do is make it harder for them to take that easy road.

CHEFF
Has anyone seen the new AMA slogan for this coming year? rights, riding, racing. Maybe we should contact them for another groups voice to be heard. Peace
Chummin
Well, the dust application was great for Holloween - but its gone now...
And now that the whoops are gone - that rode has become a nightmare - Can they please put the GIANT whoops back in ??
Kevin
yeah since we drove 2 mph from wash 11 to the highway anyways to get out.

See this is why I don't like ignore - I still like to talk to PW's as long as they're not PWing.....

Chef, the AMA is already very involved. A search of the ASA site shows a bunch of times the AMA has been involved in the fight over the ISDRA. They've done quite a bit on their own and in conjunction with the ASA like several other groups. But they're so active in other areas of riding that our issues normally only get a short blip from them nationally. (oh and just watch out for the Adaptive Management Area bits in that search - that AMA is NOT good for anyone who loves the dunes!)

dunernr
Glenn, they cleared the sand from Greys Well on Wednesday the 26th. It was real bad prior to that. And they were checking for passes this time when I left on Sunday.
LoBuck
Thanks Jeff! The BLM didn't say anything on the call today about clearing the sand, glad you mentioned it.

I was at Buttercup on Sunday afternoon and watched the exiting duners while I aired the tires back up on my Jeep. The fee machine was pretty busy.
