Cops weigh charges in E. Side lassoing

By Eric Swedlund, ARIZONA DAILY STAR

Tucson police are investigating whether a man lassoed and yanked off his dirt bike Sunday was assaulted or if the roping was justified because the biker spooked the roper's horses.

No charges have been filed against the cowboy.

The biker, Brian Corell, 33, was cited and police impounded his dirt bike. Under the Tucson City Code, it is illegal or ride an off-road vehicle within a quarter mile of structures, said Sgt. Marco Borboa, a Tucson Police Department spokesman.

Corell was riding home with two teen boys, his girlfriend's son and a friend, in the Pantano Wash near South Houghton Road Sunday afternoon when two men from the nearby Pantano Riding Stables rode horses past the boys and lassoed him, Borboa said.

Corell, who was knocked unconscious briefly and was treated overnight at University Medical Center, says he has no memory of the incident and has had to rely on the boys' accounts of what happened.

The owner of the stables told officers there has been a problem with off-road vehicles spooking horses and that he has been concerned that a horse rider could get seriously hurt, according to a police report.

The man told police he and a friend heard the dirt bikes and rode up to the riders, telling them to leave. When Corell refused, one of the riders roped him and Corell fell off the bike, according to the report, which does not name the horsemen.

Corell said he was riding about 30 mph when "two cowboys showed up and passed up the boys and chased me down, and one of them lassoed me."

"Obviously we were in violation of the code, but absolutely this did not come close to justify what this guy did," Corell said. "It's not like we were on Pantano Stables property. If he did feel the need to do this, I'm glad he got me and not one of the boys."

Corell and the two boys were each issued a $68 citation for violating the City Code and had to pay $47 per bike to get them out of impound.

The owner of Pantano Riding Stables was out of town Wednesday and not available for comment.

As demonstrated by the article, I'm not the only one who resists the unsustainable effects and nuisance of off-roaders riding where they're not supposed to.

From the conservation orgs like PEER, CBD, Sierra Club, TWS, EarthJustice, GreenPeace, CNPS, and an alphabet soup of similar groups, to individuals like myself-- people are fed up with the effects of off-road use on our common natural areas.

The only way that off-road use will continue in the long term is to begin to control the impacts on the land and the quality of life of others.

The main thing is SUSTAINABILITY. As off-roaders impact more and more land and demand more and more land be set aside for their use, the question arises--where will it end?

Our natural areas are in serious trouble of being used by developers to put in new homesites and industrial sites and mines, landfills, grazing areas, roads, etc.

Anyone who loves nature has to be concerned that we are now impacting the last bit of our natural areas that can be enjoyed by us and future generations. There is really no "reclaiming" nature. Once it's been paved over, it's impossible to "restore" it to its natural state.

People who enjoy off-roading as a way to get back into nature are kidding themselves. Just by travelling to the back country on a vehicle, you're sounding the death knell of the area you are enjoying.

Our responsibility to others and to future generations is to impact our natural areas as lightly as possible.

Our public agencies tell us that hiking and horseback riding are acceptible impacts.

Off-road vehicles leave heavy impacts and are on the way out.

Read the handwriting on the wall.

The only ones that stand up for the rights of off-roaders are the ones who are making money from off-roading. Mark Harms, Roy Denner, Don Amador, and the rest are trying to get you folks to protect the sport of off-roading so they can keep making money.

Can you put a price tag on the natural lands permanently impacted by off-roading?

Absolutely. At the very least. I don't care where the land is situated, taking the law into your own hands is just not right.

And those of you who are getting angry at BS for his posts here... just remember that you've made him very happy, since your hostility and anger are what fuels his fires... fluffs his skirt... tickles his fancy... brings a smile to his face and joy to his heart.

It's what he loves and his sole reason for being here. If you doubt that, or if you doubt that his hate mongering is intentional, try to imagine what you could expect if you were to take a pro-abortion speech to a pro-life message board. You would not be seeking enlightenment, companionship or education. You would not be there with an "optimistic" heart. You would be there to create anger and wrath and as much negative emotion as possible, surrounded by people you have absolutely nothing in common with.

And that is what he is doing here. Even in his "lucid" moment there is malice.

Ah, the life of a Troll.

If we were talking about a dirt-biker lassoing a horseman who was riding illegally in an OHV park, everyone would be outraged (especially Bluesky).

1. You would like that, so no!
2.I think he is a Prison Guard at your personal Prison and you are his main Ho.
3. Again we all need to work at getting along and not trying so hard to piss each other off, hint-hint Blue!
4. Do you really want to try someone on this, just a thought. Nobody wants to kill anyone, but you have raised a level of frustration on this board that makes statements like that common place.

As they always pounded into our brains when growing up, two wrongs don't make a right. If the guys on the motorcycles get a ticket and rightfully so, then the Cowboys need to go to Jail, period!

Blue, I have the balls to talk to you about finding a solution to all of our problems. All I ask is you stop trying to cause trouble on this board. Become a part of the solution.

OK blueballs, talking your trash is one thing, but don't go there when talking about the people who work for the Dept. of Corrections. I assume that you get all your info about CDC from the illustrious LA Times. They are the self proclaimed experts when it comes to CDC according to them. Therefore I would guess that makes you an expert also. My guess is that you know about as much about CDC as you claim to know about the environment. ZERO! NOTHING! NADA! Correctional Officers do a job in an environment that you have no clue about and never will, unless you show up with a number. Don't worry though, there are programs and medication that would do you a lot of good, and "Bubba" the lifer would certainly like to have you around for a while. So if you want to change your screen name to "Prison Bitch" then I think we here on the forum can make the necessary changes. I think it would fit you perfectly. So keep it up troll. You're a joke.

I live in Tucson and the stable owner should be sued! That wash is 100 yards away from any horse on his property if not farther. Houghton rd is the city limit boundary also. People have been riding in that wash for as long as i can remember and the stables have always been there. Im pretty sure the horses were not spooked. The stables do not own that land! It is public he had no business yanking someone off of their bike.I hope he loses everything he owns for doing that!

Motorized present lassoed by equine past

Oct. 21, 2003 12:00 AM

Just about a week ago, with the afternoon sun slanting through the mesquite trees along Pantano Wash and great cactuses standing solemnly at attention, a Tucson cowboy flung a lariat at modern technology, snaring a motorcyclist and risking prosecution on charges of assault with the apparent intent to rein in progress.

According to news accounts, a man and two teenage boys were riding dirt bikes through the desert near Pantano Riding Stables in southeast Tucson. The Web site for the stable urges potential visitors to "leave your stress, deadlines and worries behind." Adding that it has "professional wranglers ready and waiting to guide you on a Western adventure."

The owner told police after the incident that there has been a problem with off-road vehicles getting too close to the horse trails and spooking the animals. Tucson city code says that off-road vehicles should not be driven within a quarter mile of any structure.

But in urban America it is difficult to be anywhere that is a quarter of a mile from a building. The earthquake of technology strikes over and again at the epicenter of every city, sending out wave after wave of housing developments, strip malls, freeways, schools, taverns, office complexes, parking garages, fast food joints, multiplex movie theaters and on and on.

This is true even in southern Arizona, where the great silent sky above Pantano Wash is sometimes streaked like a chalkboard by the contrails of fighter jets from nearby Davis-Monthan Air Force Base. There is no lariat of sufficient length or durability to lasso an A-10 Thunderbolt, however.

The same is not true of a motorcyclist. Police say they've heard differing versions of the encounter, and are in the process of sorting them out. They were told by two men on horseback that they confronted three dirt bikers on a trail near the stables. There was some kind of testy exchange that appears to have ended with the cyclists riding off and the horsemen in pursuit. One of the motorcyclists was lassoed and pulled from his bike. He was knocked unconscious and spent the night in a Tucson hospital. Later, on TV, he showed off the rope burns on his neck.

The 33-year-old motorcyclist told the Arizona Daily Star, "Obviously we were in violation of the code, but absolutely this did not come close to justify what this guy did. It's not like we were on Pantano Stables property. If he did feel the need to do this, I'm glad he got me and not one of the boys."

Down at the stables none of the wranglers is talking. When contacted Monday and asked about the incident, one of them told me, "I don't expect anyone here has anything to say about that."

The motorcyclists each were issued citations for violating the Tucson city code and had to pay $47 each to get their bikes out of the police impound yard. A police spokesman said Monday that while no charges had been filed against the cowboy, "The investigation into this is still going on."

If it can be proven that the dirt bikes startled the horses it is possible the cowboy will not be prosecuted. He is lucky as well that the lassoed cyclist was not seriously injured. Whether he is charged or not, however, the cowboy's skillful and dangerous attempt to yank modern man from the engine of development was doomed to failure.

The folks at Pantano Stables are said to be hearing from both sides, from those who say that what the horseman did was dangerous and unnecessary and from those who'd like to learn the technique or to hire a skilled cowboy to lasso some neighbor, boss, spouse, business owner or politician. Some people even have promised to go out of their way to book a trail ride at the stables as a way of showing support for the cowboy.

I'm told that sunset is the best time. The sky fades to pink and a breeze flows along the winding wash like runoff from a monsoon. Animals creep out from the underbrush. Javelina. Rabbits. Coyotes. While desert birds gather in congenial groups on tree branches, chattering about the good old days of horses and wagons, their chirping interrupted now and then by the noise of an engine.

Hey, if you don't keep the place up to code...don't call 5-0.

Reminds me of an episode of COPS where a woman calls the cops because another woman stole her $20. It was a classic conversation:

Woman: The lady in that house stole my $20.
Cop: What happened?
Woman: I knocked on her door and gave her my $20, and she didn't give me nothin'.
Cop: What was she supposed to give you?
Woman: Something. Never mind.

To make that story even more hilarious, the woman who lived in the house came up with the funniest quote I've ever heard someone say seriously:
(indignantly) Dang! I ain't no drug dealer...I'm a prostitute!
