Full Version: Gen 3 Hoppin' Sand Scooper

Got a Gen 3 that hops and almost feels like it wants to flip the back end over the top to the front. It is also a sand scooper. It sticks the nose into a dune and then on rebound throws the sand in your face. I've altered the air pressure a number of times both in the front and back air bags, but it seems to no avail. I now anticipate the throwing of the sand so I drive slower than I'd like just to keep the sand out of my face. I hate it! Any suggestions?
Bohica
Does your Gen. 3 have Bypass shocks? If not, it would greatly improve the tuning ability of your suspension.
whoopsadaisy
When was the last time your shocks were serviced? Sound like they are worn out.
raspadoo
Have you had your shocks serviced lately? What air pressure are you running on bags and what motor? Bypass shocks in the rear are a major improvement and increase resale value so they would be a good addition as allready reccomended, plus you could adjust to your preference at the dunes.

I have a gen 3 also. I don't exhibit the same issues as the original poster, but I do exhibit a lot of rear end bounce. Would bypass shocks help with this? If I do upgrade to bypass, should I buy a new shocks, or should I send them to King/Funco to be rebuilt and have bypass added?

Here's a picture of a Funco at its Best! I had a Gen 2 and it Scooped Sand and Hopped so badly I couldn't wait to sell it. I then purchased a Gen 3, you would have thought I'd learn, and it did the same thing. Grant's answer after adding anti-freeze to the air bags, revalving the shocks, & adjusting air pressures, "You're overdriving the car." I can drive my Alumicraft car into the side of a mountain as fast as I want and it never has scooped sand or tried to hop on its roof. This is a picture of a Gen 4, I believe, and it sure looks like it has the same inherent problems as the previous 3 designs. Or maybe this guy/gal is "Overdriving It?" Yep! If airbags were any good they would be on all off-road cars instead of trucks and big motorhomes. If you ain't scooped sand or had your Funco try and flip itself over onto its top, you haven't been driving the car hard enough. Putt Putt Putt to the hill, Putt Putt Putt to the drags, Putt Putt Putt back to camp. Whoo Hoo!

Nice first post^^^^^.....I have a Gen 4 and do not have any of the affore mentioned problems.......I run 42lbs in front and 47/48lbs in rear. triple by-pass.....

Sounds like something is wrong. I rode with Grant and his group and don't remember plowing sand like that. We were pretty much driving as hard as could be in the confines of Winchester Bay.

Looks like you joined a few minutes before your bash. ???
whoopsadaisy
I believe that is Bohaca coming down off of a hill in one of the EPOs (whatever that is).

I'll take that bet. laughing.gif

That picture is me, launching off a big transition in an EPO practice. My car never hopped and yes it did scoop, but only when landing off big jumps or transitions. It's an easy fix to get rid of, just raise the ride height in the front, easily done with taller tires. But in doing so, your gonna give up some of the handling. It's all a trade off, you want an occasional sand blasting or deal with body roll.

With my new Gen.5, haven't had it scoop yet. With the taller tires and 3" shocks, I can run the air pressure in the bags at only 35 lbs in front and have yet to bottom out or scoop the front even on very hard g-outs.

That pic reminds me of...me.

Bad Wheelie

I know it's not a Funco but any car will scoop if driven too aggressively.

Sounds like you're a bit defensive. "Yes it did scoop, but only..." The funco Big 5 has its drawbacks and sand scooping and hopping are inherent defects that should have been corrected a long time ago. When you anticpate a ton of sand hitting you in the face you tend to back off and therefore you just became second place.

I'm not defensive at all, only speaking of my experiences in my car. I wear a full face helmet, not afraid of a little sand in the face, so need to back off.

Let me ask you a question, did you come here to get help or just start shiat. I can see you didn't answer the questions people have asked you about your car, trying to help you with your set up. From that, I can only assume that your another one of those internet blow hards just trying to start up drama. moof.gif

Thats a great analogy proven by the results of said "EPO" challenges, wait ....nevermind.. Just buy something with 24" of travel upfront, max out your preload and push your front end all over the dunes. Proper sag, weight bias, rake, valving and low center of gravity = good cornering. I've had my share of Long travel cars and you can definately get them to handle but for the dunes the longer the travel the more sag that is necessary. Oh, and by the way the most common cause of the problems you describe is probably due to your "backing off" at an inopportune time. "When in doubt throttle out"...offroad 101

Nice first post. Are you sure that you have even owned a Funco? Obviously your new car works great going straight. Duning is not about going straight. If you ever did own a Funco, you would know that duning is about turning. You are the typical jack@$$ that can start a new avatar and doesn't have the cahoneys to say who you really are. Your obviously a know it all who really doesn't know anything. I've built numerous Funcos and any questions we have had for Grant have been answered and the answer was always RIGHT. None of our customers have ever had any complaints of hopping or scooping. Maybe its a short between the steering wheel and the accelerator pedel and not the car. The great thing about Funco is that anyone who owns one knows that they are driving the best handling car in the dunes. If you think you are "over driving" your "Funco", than you have obviously never gone for a ride with Grant. Thats all I have to say about that!
gordon
i had a alumicraft before my funco yes alumicraft is a great car but i bet there is no alumicraft that can beat a funco thru the dunes no way can that happen. i was sold on that car after my first ride and i only have a gen 3 with there new body styles that company is gonna dominate even more then what they already do and to say the customer service is the best i have ever seen when was the last time cooley out there in the dunes
gordon
i have an idea meet me at pad 4 with your hot shot car my old worn out funco will race with u to olds and back if u would like and ive only been duning 4 years but would love to give it a try i have a blue funco will be right at the end of pad 4

I now this topic is old but I find it very funny.... Let me take you back to October of 2007. A few of us meet up with a couple Funco owners for weekend trip. I can't remember the guys name for the life of me but he was a great guy..... In his cars he had his wife, teenage daughter and a friend of hers. Needless to say, first morning out we had a great time FOLLOWING the Funco for 3-4 hours... We were on the turning breaks all day just to try and keep up with him. I remember this like it was yesturday because of a comment he made. "You think that was fast, wait till we put on the helmets and leave the ladies in camp...." Lets just say he had to look back and slow down just so we stayed as a group... Yeah, I know some of you will say well you can't drive that well if he left you behind. BS!!!!! We needed every bit of HP out of the LS motors just to keep up with his turbo Subie FUNco.....

I don't know Grant or any of the guys over at Funco but let me tip my hat to them and the quality product they have........ Remember this, if they hate you, it's because they are jealous........!!!!!!

Oh by the way, we ran out of gas before we could catch him........ 25cheers.gif

I have yet to see a regatta from any other sandcar builder that has as many cars in the dunes as FUNCO.
