Do I need a special pass to camp there? If so, where do I buy it?
How is the drive on the 78 from the 5? Is it a dangerous drive? Not sure whether to take the 10 to the 86 or 5 to the 78.
Where should I camp as a first-timer?
Anyone else gonna be there?
Thanks!

You don't need a pass there.
I think most peeps coming from your area take the 10 to the 86, but I might be mistaken.

Where are u coming from? 78 to Ocotillo from the I5 is a lot of two-lane blacktop, plus a pretty nasty (but easily avoidable) grade. Beautiful drive, I love it. But coming from LA, 10 to the 86 is much much faster.
No pass required. Make sure your registration is current on your toys and have flags (new regulation).
Main Street is the easiest area to find. There's cabanas and pit toilets if you need either. Plus you're close to Blowsand and Shell Reef for popular play areas, and Desert Ironwoods if you need supplies or parts. Dump station is available at the Ranger station, or at Blu-Inn (at least it used to be available... been a while).
Fun place, I learned to ride there. When are u going?

from the 5 I would not take the 78 as you'll go up and over Julian..which is a nasty ride if your pulling a trailer..and the 2-22 is also a bad grade.... you could take the 79 to the S-2..PM me or post in the Ocotillo forum and I'll give you all the info I can....we'll be out there the weekend of New Years if your interested...

Thanks!
We're going this weekend Fri-Mon. My wife has been begging me to go for quite some time.
If anyone else is planning on making it out this upcoming weekend, shoot me a PM.

first thing you should do when you get there is get a MAP, it shows the location to all the main spots to check out, if you like trail riding you will like it there, its becoming my wifes fav place to quad ride

Is Ocotillo dirt or sand or a combo for riding?

My wife prefers the trails that's why we're going. Me? I'm indifferent. I'll ride wherever and whenever I can the opportunity.
I'm sure I can pick up a map at a ranger station, right?
We'll be leaving late Friday night and returning Monday afternoon. I think that should give up plenty of time to check things out.

def take the 10 to 86. The north side will be less crowded (S2) then the south side (78). But the south side has more to do, places to stop etc.......
Its mainly hardpack, with sand at Blow Sands.
HAve fun, its a big area.

I second the "don't go I5 to the 78" route. The more direct route would be the I15 to the 79 to S2 to the 78. Lots of two lane driving here. The interstate route would be 10 to the 86S, but that route always seems so much longer for me.
The dump at the Ranger Station and at Blu Inn are closed, but you can dump at Desert Ironwoods for $15. We personally camp off County Line Road, because it is kind of more central to everything.

We're neighbors. I'm in Bellflower.
So 91(E) to 15(S) to 79 to S2 to 78(S)?
Does the 10 to the 86 "seem" or is it "actually" longer?

It's probably a wash. But the 86S is four lane divided highway... the 78 is two-lane, some semi-mountain-type driving. Plus you can dump at the AM/PM in Mecca (at the 86/111 junction) for $3 or $4 if memory serves.
