New server is up. Galleries haven't been copied over yet so they're not working just yet. But the BBS is back up. Some of the configs are still not fully settled though so please be sure to use:

http://www.americansandassociation.org/phpBB3/index.php

To access the BBS. I'm working on making the redirects from the shorter domain names and the old phpBB2 directory work properly.

Actually the straight 2-3 conversion was cake. Just time consuming. And adding some of our tweaks in was even easier than old versions. But the gallery integration was a bit tricky. And now that's what I have to do over again since we lost the new gallery data directory in the crash. Until I had the BBS and Gallery working on our test server we didn't want to take anything live so we wouldn't be stuck with only part working. Now we're stuck with that thanks to the drive crash...grrr.

It was a lot easier than converting from Snitz to phpBB was back when we did that. And easier than some incremental 2.x upgrades we went through.

But they still haven't fixed some of the things that bug me the most about their code base. Which results in the mod process still being difficult to maintain as you add more mods. With all the other fixes they did it surprises me they didn't make the fundamental changes necessary to support a better mod system.

A lot of things have gotten a lot better...but there are some fundamental things that really should have changed and haven't yet.

The new server is a kick butt server...

Dell 2950-III 2U Rack Server
Dual Quad Core 2.33ghz procs (meaning 8 / 2.33ghz Processors)
480GB SATA Raid 5 Disks (4-160GB 10,000rpm drives)
8GB of RAM

We fully upgraded the OS to Ubuntu Enterprise 8.04, MySQL Server 5 at the latest stable release, and PHP to version 5.

Including a 3-year onsite, next business day support warranty.

I think the cost of the server was just around $2200-2400... I would have to check my credit card statement, as I paid for it up front, and the ASA reimbursed me.

Nice box.. icon_biggrin.gif

a server upgrade is next on the list for DDR, my current machine needs to be upgraded however i cant get into the damn DC to do it cuz it takes a friend of a friend of a friend type deal to get it done.. Im half tempted to go to a paid dedicated hosting and dont know if i wanna do that just yet.. Free is nice LOL.

Also the reason i went to IPB over PHPBB for DDR was just that the mods and the outdated way's of doing things.. IPB just handles alot of the mundane tasks much easier adn modding the software is as simple as uploading a file to a mod directory and running the installer icon_biggrin.gif

Themes were coded much easier and Gallery integration was cake.
