Well Bear, you start by plopping the filter down in gasoline, solvent, or a good cleaning agent like simple green. I use simple green because it's non toxic but you have to clean it twice sometimes to get all the oil and sand/dirt out of the filter. I also mix about 1/4 parts simple green to 1 part hot water.

After it's clean and dry, oil it well with a foam air cleaner specific oil like PJ1 filter oil. It's much tackier and collects the dirt and sand better than motor oil or other lighter oils. Most manuals say to dunk it in the oil and wring out the excess but I just make sure the whole filter is coated. There is such a thing as to much oil in the filter. Worst cases I've heard has been the oil has flown down the intake tract and fouled a plug. Best case is your airbox will get all cruddy.

Before you re-install, coat the part of the filter that seals against the airbox with a multi purpose grease. This keeps sand and dirt from working it's way between the airbox and filter. Almost any grease will do.

Hope that helps out.

I forgot about the grease? I use Bel-Ray waterproof to seal the intake on the bikes I have with air boxes.
I run K&N's w/ Outerwears

I love my Dawn soap biggrin.gif

I use kerosene to clean it first then the soap and hot water and let it dry. Like Ben said use foam filter oil.

The grease is not needed on the 400ex. The filter has a metal tube on it and the rubber boot on the air box clamps over it with a hose clamp. You can put it on if you want but you’d just be making a mess for nothing!

Sorry WFO, I typed that up as you were posting yours and didn't see what you had posted. Besides, I hardly ever read anything written by you any more, maybe you need to get punked once in a while to keep you in line. laugh.gif

On the subject of the grease, I didn't know the honda filter was built like that. I'm used to Yamaha's where you have to learn the tricks to make em work.
SHOCKER
Buy a K&N biggrin.gif
