GLAMIS — A Canyon Lake man was killed early Friday here after being thrown from his dune buggy that overturned as it went down a sharp hill in the Imperial Sand Dunes Recreational area.

Jeffrey Scott Larue, 42, traveled in an eastbound direction toward the crest of a sand hill and steered hard to his left before reaching the peak, said California Highway Patrol Officer Juan Arroyo in a statement.

Larue, who was unrestrained, suffered fatal injuries from the fall. Three of Larue’s teen-age passengers were also unrestrained during the 2:20 a.m. incident.

One of them, a 17-year-old Canyon Lake resident, suffered major injuries and was taken to Pioneer’s Memorial Hospital in Brawley.

Two 16-year-old boys, one from Corona and other from Riverside, suffered only minor injuries, Arroyo said. They traveled in Larue’s sand rail vehicle unrestrained.

Two other passengers, Michael Woempner, an 18-year-old Canyon Lake resident, and Scott Bowers, a 37-year-old Carlsbad man, suffered minor to moderate injuries, Arroyo said.

The incident remains under investigation.

UPDATE FROM CANYON LAKE GROUP MEMBER ALXCOOK:

Seems the teenagers wanted to go out and snowboard down some steep hills at night, so the dad decided to take them, no one put seat belts on, they headed out to the dunes from Gecko. They went over a ridge and rolled the buggy, ejecting the driver, Jeff. 3 teenagers were knocked out and Jeff was killed on impact. Jeff's son Kyle broke his back, but is doing better. Wife Jan, and other son Corey were at home. All others are doing fine as of right now.

We are going to do a fundraiser with Little League for Opening Day. Both kids played thru our Little League, Corey just tried out last Saturday...........

I highly doubt that he planned on crashing his buggy. Therefore, it was an accident in the sense that he had no intention of wrecking the car.

A 42-year-old Canyon Lake man died and four people were injured early Friday at the Imperial Sand Dunes near Glamis when the sandrail he was driving overturned.

Jeffrey Scott Larue was driving the vehicle up the crest of a sand hill when he steered hard to the left, overcorrected and flipped over his vehicle, a California Highway Patrol news release said. The crash was reported at 2:20 a.m.

Larue was ejected from the vehicle, according to the release.

A 17-year-old Canyon Lake boy seated in the back of the vehicle suffered major injuries and was taken to Pioneers Memorial Hospital, the release said.

Michael Woempner, 18, of Canyon Lake, received moderate injuries and a 16-year-old boy from Corona suffered minor injuries, the release said.

A 16-year-old boy from Riverside was also taken to Pioneers Memorial Hospital, but the release did not detail his injuries.

Scott Bowers, 37, of Carlsbad, was not injured.

None of the people involved in the crash were using safety equipment, the release said.

The cause of the collision is under investigation.

What a shame... After all the incidents that happen out there and all of the unexpecteds, someone(or 5 someones) would actually get into a car and not use the seat belts. dunno.gif

Nobody ever plans on wrecking their buggy. That's why I buckle up before I put it in gear. 5 point harnesses, wrist restraints, helmets... they are all a pain in the butt to put on, but I'd like to live to dune another day, so I do it.

Not to be a dick but everone should plan on crashing thier buggy.

I know I do, that's why I added a bunch of extra bars, thats why I carry a first aid kit, that's why it never moves unless everyone is straped in, including arm restraints.

We play hard.....be prepared!
