Someone at my work told me someone died last weekend in a crash, and there face came off or something? Does anyone know about this? I want to kill it, if it's a rumor. I think it might be BS. So I want to punk him.
SailAway
I don't know about the details of the injuries, but Saturday afternoon we were told by a BLM representative that there had been two fatalities already.

Usually the BLM compiles a very brief report of how the weekend went... seems to me we used to receive it by the Wednesday after the weekend, but I don't recall for sure.

It was a nasty weekend for Glamis, that much is certain. Lots of people cutting across dune lines, others taking stupid chances, you name it.

Definitely one of our ugliest.

I heard on the radio that the was a hit and run fatality in Glamis flats. Haven't heard anything else since then.

I heard a bunch of White People started acting like A-holes. The Whites were just being idiots and ran into each other because that's what Whites like to do. Because we are stupid.
Kev you RACIST!

There is a post on the asa website about a 17 year old boy who was hit by a buggy and died on halloween. sad.gif Very sad to read. It is in the wide open sand area
SAL
NEWPORT BEACH — Corona del Mar High School senior Matthew Ramirez loved dirt bikes.

He had pictures of them on his binders. He wore T-shirts with them to school. He talked about them with his friends, telling them about his trips to ride all terrain vehicles in the Glamis desert in Imperial County.

On Halloween, with the day off from school, he decided to go out there again. When friends couldn't make it, his father, Rigo, took the day off work to go riding with his son.

After a day on the trails and dunes of the dirt-bike mecca, the two took off back to camp in the darkness.

Out of nowhere, a dune buggy sped by and struck Matt's ATV from behind, throwing him off the vehicle. The buggy hesitated for a moment, then roared off into the desert night.

Matthew suffered a broken neck and died in his father's arms just before 11 p.m. Halloween night.

He was 17.

"He was obsessed with riding dirt bikes," Corona del Mar senior Melissa Dearen said of her friend Matt. "That's just what he did."

A day after the accident, a Tucson man turned himself into authorities and has been charged with felony hit --and-run.

On Monday, friends of Matthew Ramirez wore T-shirts to school emblazoned with a photo of him in his trademark backward ball cap and sunglasses, taken by his friend, senior Katie Doran. She originally printed up 30, but after seeing the shirts, more students had some made and wore them to school Tuesday. His friends also passed out 650 memorial ribbons.

Even though he wasn't in school, his spirit was, bringing students together to remember him.

The school will further honor Matthew with a memorial service in the campus' Little Theater on Monday at 7 p.m.

Besides his love of dirt bikes, his friends remembered him as a kind and genuine person, always in a good mood and always willing to talk .

"He was one of the best people you could meet," friend Cynthia Shettler said. "He was a real happy-go-lucky guy. He always had a smile on his face and was never mad."

Principal Sharon Fry said that the school honored Matthew with a moment of silence Tuesday morning. Teachers spoke of him as a nice, thoughtful person, someone good to be around, she said.

"You'd walk into the classroom and his smile and his laugh would just make you laugh," Katie said. "He had such a great laugh. It just made your day better hearing it."

Also important to Matthew were his faith and his friends from church, said his mother, Genevieve.

Earlier this year, he also completed the Mission Bay Triathlon.

"If he set his mind on it, he could do so many things," his mother said. "He was determined to get what he wanted and was very strong in his belief and what he wanted to do."

And what he wanted to do more often than not, was ride dirt bikes at Glamis, a love shared by his friend Melissa.

But not everyone there is safe. Not everyone there is careful. And people do get hurt. Even before the accident, Melissa's father said he didn't want her to go there anymore.

"Accidents are pretty common, especially during what we call Glamis Season, late October until about April," California Highway Patrol Officer Carlos Davila said of the area. "You get thousands of people out there and a lot of the time they end up crashing. If you've got one ATV and another comes up on them, a lot of the time they don't see each other."

The day after the accident, Tucson resident Harry Lane Foster, 53, turned himself in to authorities at the Glamis Ranger Station, admitting to striking Matthew's ATV with his dune buggy. He was booked on charges of felony hit-and-run and vehicular manslaughter and posted $30,000 bail, according to Davila. Investigators don't know if he was driving under the influence.

Services will be held for Matthew Ramirez from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the Christian Tabernacle Church at 308 N. Main St. in Santa Ana. He is survived by his mother, Genevieve; father, Rigo; brother, Robert; sister Christine Aguilar; nieces Mikayla Ramirez and Adena Aguilar; and nephew Caleb Ramirez.

From the L.A. TIMES May Matthew rest in peace.....

Sal,

I think this is the accident I passed on the way back from Olds Fri. nite on sand HWY. I saw one person nealing down that must have been the father. icon_cry.gif How extremely sad, I would hate to have to ever go through that icon_sad.gif

Our families prayers will be with Matts family.

I wish there was some kind of retro alcohol test that could be done to see if Mr. Foster was under the influence. I don't know and I shouldn't assume, but it is possible that he was drunk and took off and didn't turn himself in until he was sober. This is beyond sad.

This type of accident happened at the River this season in Parker, AZ - a boater plowed over another boat killing three teenagers and seriously injuring the fourth - I am not sure the outcome on the fourth, I didn't follow up, but the information stated that the boater left the scene after the accident occurred, did not provide any assistance, and turned himself in with his lawyer present TWO DAYS later! There was bad feelings in the boating community over this terrible accident. The information reported stated that it may have been alcohol related, but due to the boater fleeing the scene they were unable to confirm. I was told that the charges would have been much stronger if the accident could have been proven as alcohol related. There is no excuse for being chicken $H*t and not staying at the scene of an accident you caused! The family must be devastated - I am a father of three and I know the wonders that children bring- I am at a loss of words after reading that the son passed in his father's arms.

Rameriz family - you are in our prayers.
Chummin
That just sucks. The guy in the rail - will get his..

One thing I dont understand though is what the kid was riding on. A motocycle or a ATV (quad).
Cause if there were no lights on the bike that would suck for both the rail driver and the Rameriz family cause it could have been avoided. sad.gif
DJTHUNDER
Chummin - lights or no lights the driver of the rail new what he did, and booked it! He's a frickin' coward, if it were a no lights situation, and he hit the rider, than plead your case, the dark cloud has formed over the driver of the rail for fleeing. I will say, newspapers can jack up reporting an incident in a heart beat, maybe there is more information that has not been reported - so I base my comments on what was reported. The bottom line is the Rameriz Family lost their son and that is very tragic.
SAL
hmmm... I second that... doesn't matter if the kid was walking.
realbadlarry
I think Chummin's point was more about, We need to watch out for the other jerks who are out there. We need to make sure we have lights and flags and pay attention to what is going on around us. Its unfortunate when things like this happen, we all know we have to do everything we can to avoid these people. Nobody is going to watch out for us, we have to do it ourselves. I don't think anyone is placing blame on the victim. There is plenty of blame to go on the P*&%Y who ran from this accident.
SAL
yeah... that's what I wanted to emphasize the fact that the guy took off from the accident... but light, whip or no whip, if this is the same accident that Looney Duner saw on sand highway... that sucks because it's not cool to scream through there knowing some people just cruise it... but hey... we don't know all the details so I better keep much fingers still rolleyes.gif
CHEFF
Beyond sad is right. And the guy driving the buggie, if he has a conscious, is getting his everyday. Peace
big had
this is a tragedy, and I certainly do not want to steer away from it.....but, how many of you drink and drive? Don't put down what we ourselves are guilty of...yes, the fact remains, a right person would stay and assist/help....but the drinking part, pleaze.....don't jump on the "he was drunk" wagon, especially if you do it too.....it just strikes me as odd to demonize drinkers while holding a beer in your hand....
Looney Duner
Big Had brings up a very good point, alot of us do still drink and drive in the dunes. But there is still responsibilty involved with doing that. We all take along the beverages on rides, but we also refrain from riding in the overpopulated areas such as sand HWY, or the road into Olds, or down wash road. We always try to stay in the dunes, and off the main drags, if your drinking and driving in these crowded areas, your just asking for trouble. Its just like driving out around town, even if someone hits you, and you've been drinking your gonna get screwed, so why take the chance?

Just my 2 pennies icon_cool.gif
SAL
when did anyone say he was drunk?? nobody knows at this point except for Mr. Foster and whomever he told. He could have been and it would be nice to know if he was, so they could slap another charge on him for ending a life, taking away a son from a mother, a son from a father and a brother from siblings.
SailAway
I think it's human nature to look for some reason behind this unreasonable death.

For some, the idea of this man running away because he was drunk sets their minds at ease. Maybe the buggy driver wasn't stone cold drunk but he had been drinking enough to impair his judgment and put his head on a platter if he was tested, so fear and alcohol drove him on. Or maybe he was drunk and his reasoning skills were dulled enough that he didn't think anyone was seriously hurt until he replayed it later when the fog lifted a little.

For some, having alcohol involved makes it easier to understand why anyone would leave a boy to die in the sand, wrapped in his father's arms.

The alternative, that this person was sober and knew that he was leaving a tragedy behind, is just unthinkable. In some small way, I'm sure there are some people who are hoping alcohol was involved... not just to make the punishment harsher, but also because they don't want to believe we really have monsters in the sand with us.

Seemed like a good kid. I feel sorry for his family, especially his father...

Unless of course, he had a passenger, then there would be two or more people that know what happened. Not many people dune alone at night.

if this is true, that man is nothing more than scum.......

may he rot in a cell

Very, very sad! My mother-in-law, last weekend asked if we knew of an accident involving a 17 year old boy. I told her not that I knew of, apparently she works with his mother in Costa Mesa. My heart and prayers go out to the innocent lives that are lost in Glamis, and to there families.
