This is stupid but, I've been to Buttercup a few times. How do I get to Gordon Wells? And how do I get to the camping area once there?
Going down this weekend.

Where are you coming from? If your coming form Yuma take the 8 east to the gordons well exit make a right then make another right at the stop sign. Then fallow the road to the dirt road(slight left turn) then fallow that up and over the bridge and you are at the camp ground.

Thanks Banshee.
We are coming from the Yuma side.
How far past the Buttercup exit is Gordon Wells?

Well, didn't make it to Gordon's. Buddies of mine went down first, set up at Buttercup so we went there. We had a great weekend though. Riding was excellent though and we had a great time with friends around the campfire. Next trip will be in January and we'll try to make it over to Gordon Wells then.

Even if you're camped at Buttercup you can still head up to Gordon's for some riding. Just go west at Buttercup until you run out of dunes, then follow along just south of the highway - there are a bunch of trails you can pick up (but remember the border gets closer the further west you go so it's a fairly thin slice of desert you can legally ride on) the trails all pretty much end at the bridge.
There's a new bridge there just south of the highway bridge which lets you cross the canal - then you can take the highway bridge (Caltrans opened it for OHV use as well as street legal vehicles) over to Gordon's. Take a right just over the road and follow the trails. You'll have to take one more bridge over the canal again but then you'll be at Dune Buggy flats - just head east until you go up the ridge and you're in the dunes!

Jason... I talked to a BP guy about the border, got some very intersting information... Like I have said before never had a problem crossing into mexico or coming back into the US, I will continue my normal routine. "BLow Hole" here I come!

Dog people swim in the canel at the East and West bridges... The East one seems to get the most action, more like a beach down there!

nr, Not sure who at the BP you've talked with but I've been told otherwise by more BP than I can count. In fact I've been pulled over with light and siren because I strayed too far south. I also know of several people who had their toys impounded and were hit with some MAJOR fines for crossing the border illegally.
It all depends on the BP guy you get. Most will let you off with a warning, but some are major pricks....like the ones who wouldn't even give a sip of water to my friends who were stuck and hiking back to camp even though the BP had a full 5 gallon beverage cooler in the back
But that same night I ran into a couple of BP who led me back to camp because I was lost. It's just the luck of the draw.
After having been pulled over in the past and speaking with people who have been full on busted for crossing I've decided it's not a risk I'm willing to take.

Jason, You're right about the luck of the draw. I try to keep the good karma flowing by helping them out when possible. That weekend we met you in buttercup after you left we went for a night ride and came across a BP stuck. He said their scope picked up the buggy traveling with our group and wanted a ride back to the BP post. We told him to just get in the truck and we would push him. We had 5 or 6 guys with us at the time( the buggy hadn't caught up yet). Sent him on his way with the agreement he would keep an eye on our camp while we were out riding.

I had it easy for a year. When I moved into my current house the house to the right of me had 2 BP guys living in it and the house across the street had 3. I would see their personal jeep out in the dunes all the time and assume that they were the reason I was never hassled for accidentally dipping across the border while they lived near me

But that was before 9/11 after that BP got a lot more important in a lot of peoples eyes and they don't mess around as much. Even so one of the people I know who had a trip ruined because they had their toys impounded for crossing illegally had it happen well before 9/11. And they were not at all the kind of people you expect to have any kind of run-in with enforcement issues.
