...and yet everytime I leave I swear i will never go back. Can someone please tell me what the appeal is? In glamis we have the Drags, the hills and Boardmanville....

But whats the deal with Ocotillo? I took a guy whos never been out to show him around and we got the piss beat out of us by all the whoops. I can understand a few here and there, but everywhere? We went out Shell Reef Expy the flew down Tule Wash to Pole Line and back up Arroyo Seco then we had some lunch and decided to run along the highway East of the runway on those little hills and they are covered with huge rocks and whoops! We couldn't get out of there fast enough.

What is it that makes you people go back time and time again? Where do you prefer to ride out there....cuz IMO, unless your flying down the washes in 5th gear pinned, I just can't figure it out....

I wouldnt go there for a guys trip, but my wife really enjoys the trail riding and exploring, and me seeing her have a blast makes me happy so we go a couple times a season..

take your kids there they will have a blast

Goldenwest and Heil

Good buddy lives right there, I'm at the end of Edinger. You ride a bike, quad or a buggy???

I live in the tract behind the Sizzler.

I ride a CR500. My uncles have sancars and Rhinos too so we have it all covered.

Cool, when you headin out next???

Maybe one more trip, but we are gearing up for Havasu season next. I start getting antsy when the weather is hot like it is now.

The best oco tread topic in a while! i love oco when im driving the buggy on a quad no bueno!! but some of the best terrain is south of the 78 all the way through plaster city and super, 4 th gear 100mph down the wash over anything, thats what makes me come back!!!!!Click to view attachment

We also go to Ocotillo Wells 90% of the time. The kids like it because of the variety and they know their way around. I like it because it's close enough for even a day trip. The other big factor is that we all coordinated enough to ride on two wheels and have dirt bikes. I hate riding my wife's quad even for 10 minutes.

We go to Glamis twice a year to meet up with a big group of friends. I will admit we have fun at Glamis but sand, sand, sand gets old and if you're on a quad, it takes exactly ZERO skill to ride there. You are limited only by your sense (awareness?) of fear and/or stupidity.

Simple Answer: Quit being a Sally...

Long Answer: Ocotillo was the first desert I ever went to, and the first desert to ride a dirtbike at. Ive been to all the local dunes, all the local hardpack places, mex, barstow, pismo etc... And Ocotillo is a high dose of everything anybody could want for riding. Whoops, jumps, sand (esp super), washes, burger joints, hydroplaning, single track, technical, tight, dropoffs, rocks...etc etc...

I thought the reason riding was fun is because its hard, its not that tough to go to glamis and ride down the dracs then ride on straight san higway and go the hill, when I go to glamis or gordons im bored the first day, hence the reason I havent been to the dunes all season, even though ALL of my buddies went to glamis this past weekend, I will be at ocotillo for 4 days this weekend. Because its the shit...the less of a crowd and the more people that go to glamis the happier I am.

I like to take our buggy or race car out there and have fun, and tune, and test. But if you are really complaining about ocotillo I suggest going to Plaster City in a couple of weeks when they mark the track and do a 40 mile loop...that is tough, then try it a couple more times the day before the race, then race it in you car for 6 laps...That is a biatch...but that is why this sport is so fun, you challenge yourself as much as you want to be challenged

PS I was hit by a buggy in those canyons headon back in the badlands, scary shit.

...and pretending to be in the baja 1000 is probably the reason you broke your collar bone.

Actually broke it being a duma$$ and trying to rock-crawl with my quad. Being in a buggy, and being strapped in is a heck of a lot different than manhandling a quad through some of the terrain. I agree you do have to be on your A-game out there and know how to ride, which I do.

Not so much complaining about, it its hard on the body if you push yourself and your machine, but I was more interested if there was one common thing that everyone like the most out of it and maybe I wasn't seeing it. From the sounds of the posts, I have seen what everyone likes about it, but I need to set up my bike differently to get the most out of it. Need some good suspension and a little more cleanance to get the full effect. I have notice the road to Shell Reef has gotten pretty whooped out- no doubt by the guys flying down in the rails. Must be nice.....

Peace out

We only went to Ocotillo this year. We like riding the bikes out there better. Plus from my house to where we camp is only 2 hours. smile.gif

I agree with TACO on this one.
Rockotillo is ok once in awhile. But I get tired of the whoops and dust.
It just beats the crap out of a quad. Now on a dirt bike there is some
very good trails. But for a quad or rail, Glamis is the place to go.

ok, new rule for Taco and Chili... dirt bikes only when headed to Ocotillo! 25cheers.gif
you guys must be friends with names like that! LOL

Was there Saturday. Sand dam was the smoothest I've seen it in a long time.

Stayed at "The Dip" on the SouthEast end of Superstition last weekend. Volunteered to drive a Rzr loaded with gas for 4 bikes and a quad that were going to make a Salton Sea Run. Met them at Blu Inn for a re-fuel stop, then again at Gas Domes, then again at Blu Inn to top off before the run back to Superstition.
First time I've driven a Rzr... 5 point harness, roll cage, helmets, all the right stuff. I think it was pretty stock - didn't seem to have very much wheel travel to soak up the whoops. But a fun ride none the less, and the 800cc engine had plenty of oomph... Put about 80 miles on it round trip. Lots of fun WFO down San Felipe Wash, sliding around corners, etc... the 10 year old co-pilot was having a good time too, judging from the screams and giggles....
Kennedy's Karne asada dinner Saturday night, lots of good times....

Ocotillo is where I began riding 2 wheelers and is still my favorite. I enjoy glamis as well but I lose my touch when I go to glamis too much. the "whoops" and unpredictable territory is what makes you a better rider. If you want smooth paths of travel stay off the trails and cut some desert. I have to agree that the lack of crowds is what is my favorite at ocotillo. We have a spot that we usually go to and nobody is within a mile of us. With small children around camp its really nice. I will agree that when you hit whoops at glamis it is nothing when you are used to riding hard-pack.

Ocotillo Wells has someting to offer almost everyone. The content of the ride depends on who is on it and how everyone is doing that day! (was it a long night?)

I find that I can have fun anywhere I ride as long as I am riding....same thing I find about what I am riding, could be my sons pit bike or my KTM or one of the quads or Jeep I am going to have fun!

I prefer the camping in Ocotillo Wells over Glamis but that is only one part of the deal.

It's all fun!

Oco is where I learned to ride at with a 2 wheeler. I probably already said it but I LOVE it there. There is so much to see and I never get bored out there. It's hard to get bored riding tho... tongue.gif

BEEN TO OCA. ONCE AND NEVER WENT BACK THERE AGIAN. BUT THEN AGIAN I WAS ALSO ON A 250R. I REALLY DO THINK THAT IT WAS THE WRONG BIKE TO GO THERE WITH.I WOULD RATHER BE AT GLAMIS WHERE PRETTY MUCH ANYTHING FLIES OUT THERE.
imkingkoopadadon
ocotillo wells is fun if you know where to go. i do both a dune buggy and a i have a YZ450F and always have fun out there. just explore the place and you will find all sorts of fun washes. but 5th gear pinned through a sand wash is a blast
