I ran the bug through the new super duper slapalicous database and came back with a close up for Mr Slappy to help ID this little creature...

I've seen a few of those also Ifly, I'm wondering the same thing. It looks like a small pinacate beatle that forgot to shave. Let's hope the stickman can come through with an answer.

Yep, you called it Taco, it be da Velvet Ant. Slap just talked with our good friend Erin Dreyfus of the BLM, and she checked it out, and told Slap it is the Velvet Ant. What a beautimous little guy it is. Erin is a slapptacious friend of Slap's, and she helps out when Slap needs the info.

Here's another little funny looking guy......We found him in some sand piles other than the ISDRA
This is the best picture I have, the others all came out fuzzy.

I have to say that chasing some of those little critters makes you feel kinda goofy.... An action one doesn't do in a large group setting usually..
Mother Nature can sure have a quirky sense of humor
