My son has a 1989 Blaster with Toomy pipe, aftermarket air filter, drilled air box, and jets (from the pipe kit). It was rebuilt, top and bottom end, last winter. When it goes, it goes like a bat out of heck. However, starting it is harder than any other bike I've had. Even with new plugs in and warmed up, its extremely hard to kick over. Any suggestions????
SHOCKER
Its hard to kick?

Do you have the oil injection B/O kit?

Do you have oil in it?

Hard to kick over as in lots of compression or it takes alot of kicks to start it?

Check for air leaks, check the reeds, Check the stator is it clean? Is spark really bright.

Check the float level in the carb it is probably to low.

It sounds like hes sayin its hard to kick, myabe he seized the motor, the people who had mine before me seized the motor cause they didnt check the oil

My daughter's '90 Blaster became hard to start, and I found that the threaded cap on the top of the carb. had vibrated loose, and was allowing air to bypass the carb. throat.

The huge idle control doodad taht sets on top of the carb put enough force onthe cap over the years, that the carb body threads were stripped.

I had to replace the carb, then did a top end, reeds, and now it starts easily, and runs well!!

Hope this is helpful!!

Is the carb the stock one or did you go bigger???
SHOCKER
Yeah my old crab cap was just stripped, so I got a new one

Sorry I haven't posted earlier to clarify some of the questions raised. The motor was recently rebuilt top and bottom. I installed the oil blockoff kit last year. I still have the stock carb on. It's easy to kick but takes several (meaning too many) kicks to get it going. As suggested, I'll check the carb cap, reeds, and look for air leaks and get back to you.

Thanks for the information, I'll post my success/failure next week.

Got a Blaster for our son Caleb...it's hard to start too....thought the reason for this must be because it's a Yamaha icon_biggrin.gif

I tell him to keep kicking....figure it will give him character.... or a really strong right leg blink.gif

my buddies kid had a blaster it too is hardto start specially when cold, he has to kick it several times, but if somene gives it a really good hard kick, it fires right up
SHOCKER
I havent had any problems with my blaster, except the coil was unplugged and the drain on the carb was loos, but other wise nutin serious, chech the carb and the reeds, if the reeds are broke it will foul the sparkplug
