Looking at doing my first night ride next month. I have a couple questions.
What is the better night...Friday or Saturday. I want to see some action at Olds at night......hill climgs etc.
When is the best time to ride? (ie 10pm to 2am or 3am to when it gets hot?)
Are there any areas besides Olds that have gatherings....like is there a sand drags area or anything like that. I suppose at night sand drags would not be safe unless it was a short distance.
Do people hang at the canal during the day and swim. Is that legal to swim in the canal?
Any other advice about getting the most out of a night ride trip?
Thanks, Chris

carry lots of water, and stay with the group

it is not legal to swim in the canal

a night ride is mostly duning, no drags(maybe olds if you and a few buddies have a beef) but mostly duning those areas that are so chopped up during the season. the bowls and some other places unkown to others

either night is good. getting there friday night is good because you can ride all night and everyone loves the early am ride. after that you can decide weather to take the heat or go home.,

Other than this (GD.com group) there might not be anyone else out there. No big groups at least. Olds racing will be up to you and your fellow rifders. Don't expect any of the regular season antics out there.
Canal is OFF LIMITS! No trespassing or loitering. Keep out..

If you had to pic a night I would say Saturday. Action at Olds
the place will be totally dead
with no action whatsoever...unless the hillclimb dragtser jacka$$e$ are there. When is the best time to ride? (ie 10pm to 2am or 3am to when it gets hot?)
Best time to ride IMO is between 5 at night and about 10 in the morrning. Are there any areas besides Olds that have gatherings....like is there a sand drags area or anything like that. I suppose at night sand drags would not be safe unless it was a short distance.
There are no gatherings like sand drags or olds. Most dune because like GWTT said the bigger awesome bowls
that are usually chopped up are now butter smooth.Do people hang at the canal during the day and swim. Is that legal to swim in the canal?
Some hang near the canal, some hang inside with AC, some sit outside in the shade. June is actually not too
bad....August is the hottest night ride month.Any other advice about getting the most out of a night ride trip?
Bring lot's and lot's of cold water, and don't sit outside in the sun for too long. You can get heatstroke very easily.

If you like to watch other people ride summer night rides might not be your thing. If you like to RIDE and go to glamis to ride you will enjoy yourself more.
All the night rides Ive been on I have gone on Sat night . I get there just before the sun goes down so I can get unloaded and heading out on the ride as it gets dark. Come back into camp gas and go. Normaly get back from that ride between 11 and 12. Ill lay down and get a few hours of sleep till just before the sun comes up and Ill go out again on a ride . As soon as it starts getting hot or I get low on fuel it's back to camp to load the bike back up and go home. I have made these trips with little more than a couple gallons of water a couple Gatorades and a box of pop tarts. No need for the frills for me it's 3 good rides in less than 12 hours and turn and burn

I'm going to hit it Saturday June 21st. Its going to be pretty much a full moon. I'll just head out that afternoon and chill out in the Hauler till its decent enough to ride and then ride from dark till 3am and sleep all I can then drive home Sunday. I'll stay out of the canal, carry lots of fluids and cover all the ground I can in the dunes. I can't wait to get back out there. Thanks for the great advice

Go park your rig on pad 3.5 down on Gecko and go out and introduce yourself to the clan that will be there. They are all good peeps! Bring a couple of nice cold refreshing beverages and you'll be quick to make new friends

Stick with them and you're sure to have a great time!!!

So very true, Ive never been to glamis in the winter, not for me, not yet anyways. Its fun to get out there and know your probley the only group and have alot of fun. Pad 3.5 is the place to be on the night runs. Thats the only runs I have been on. Bring some drinks and greet some peeps, they will entertain you till your ready to go to bed or ride.

Bring plenty of fuel for your rides.and be prepared to ride alot.I went on 2 of them 2 years ago.But only was able to make one last year in august. When i took my 3 wheeler i got alot of riding in that night and mornin.
Oh and when you hear a bike start up in the morning be ready to go (otherwords have stuff ready the night before, fuel toped off, etc)cause they leave promptly IMO which is a good thing. There definitely a good group to go with and no you cant swim in the canal but theres a river you ride too.

NOT condoning going into the canal, but I have seen plenty of people in it. Ice chests tied off to a ladder, and people floating on another rope. Like I said, I DON'T condone it, just throwing in my .02

It is against the law to enter the canal. Course it's also against the law to enter this fine country illegally but.......

We go out from midnight to 9-10 in the morning but the prime riding is from false dawn till it gets too hot. This is a duning trip and aside from duning when possible, the only other thing peeps do is beat the heat. I sometimes get a room at the brawley inn and crash there during the day.
Don't bother going out alone. Head out with the group and meet us. Just show up and introduce yourself and peeps there will handle the rest.

you can ride to a section of the colorado river in a couple hrs at a decent pace in the cooler months. youd drive right now to the river. the canal is literally a 1/2 mile off pad 3

It's marked. Somewhat. Most liikely, just look for the crowd. The pad is hardpack right off the pavement. Just don't go more than about 100' off the pavement.

Devin,
Go to the other night ride topic and post up.
It's actually pad 3, right across from pad 5. Four wheel drive isn't needed.
Leaving that early you might be the first ones there.
