can Chrome last long on a 4 stroke Exhaust??
APHANTOMDUCK
Without getting into much detail, yes, if the pipe is finished properly from the start.

Ask your plater to provide you a finish that includes, semi bright, then bright nickel, then finish with chrome. You don't want any copper as a base, as copper will oxidize and eventually discolor the chrome.

Remember that you need to have your jetting a bit on the rich side, or the somewhat lean mixture will cause the plating to discolor.

Two alternate finishes that look similar to chrome is electroless nickel, and ceramic coatings. Both are tough stuff but don't have the shine of chrome.

I spent quite a few years as a technical sales person in the plating and finishing industry. The information above is based upon this background.

Hope this helps.

WoW - I did have the ceramic coating but after 2 years of hard riding it has gotten fugly

The nickel looks pretty good I must say. Alot like stainless steel. Cheap chrome likes to rust also. I'm forever polishing on my toomeys for that reason.
Kevin
the reason the ceramic coat has faded is from being sand blasted from riding. there really isnt many shops around that do decent chrome work on pi0pes anymore casue of epa regs, and the ones thatare still around aint cheap at all. oh and chrome dulls overs a few years too from being sandblasted icon_wink.gif

So far my chrome on the 2 stroke looks great and it's been on the bike for 5 years.
I think a lot depends on the quality of the chrome and the people that do the job but like Duck said copper is bad...

Kevin is right, epa has put a lot of strain on the way shops can do chrome plating. however, where are you located? I ask because I have had some chrome plating in mexico (yes across international lines where the epa has no jurisdiction bandit.gif ) and it has turned out great with no complaints. Just tell them to avoid the copper and the chrome should last a good long time without any rust problems.

Im in Whittier, near O.C. By the way thank you all for all this advice. I did'nt know that there was this much to it. Hey what happens if I cover the inside of my pipes with high temperature paint -after chrome. Once again I want to thank everyone for their help.

your exhaust will smell real bad for the first ride laughing.gif
High temp paint is not designed for direct fire burning..it will burn....
there are coatings which are available...however, they exceed the cost of your pipes with chroming...
there is no good "permanent fix" high temp paint that is sold to the public....
by the way, did you know chrome weakens the strength and integrity of metal..not that pipes matter...but that is why you don't see chrome on actual race trucks, etc...something to think about next time you see some dude on his quad with high dollar race shocks and all chromed out a arms....its all image.... icon_biggrin.gif
also watch the buggies that taco front ends and spindles, usually chrome is involved.....

Sorry Dallas, he’s right. But it’s not like it turns it into paper...

Nice!!!! Don't get mad, geeez....it is a true fact, not my opinion....chrome is great for the average rider, or on non-stressed points of the bike...or should I say those that have no intention of hammering the bike to its designed boundries.....to those that do want to, I would say upgrade for performance, not look.....

When you ride hard....stuff breaks. It is just the way it is.

This is kinda on the same subject: I am considering getting my a-arms and swingarm chromed. Has anyone done this recently? Approx how much did it run? Anyone know any good chrome shops? I am in orange county.
