anyone know what that 'horned lizard' they say is "threatened" by duners is called?
Robbie
There is no lizard that is threatened to be endangered by duners.
There might be one that is threatened to be endangered by enviromentalists though.
~glamisgirl23~
yeah, i've been looking up a 'barefoot branded gecko'...b/c it's name was in an article about the milk vetch. but they inhabit rocky, boulder-strewn areas...
no boulders in glamis.. laughing.gif
Robbie
look up the flat-tailed horned lizard.

Robbie
The thing about enviro's
They try to get every plant and creature they can on the "endangered" or "threatened" lists.
Then they try to have areas deemed "critical habitat"
Then they try to get all building, recreation and everything else restricted from the area.
And if the Dept of the interior proves that a species is not endangered or threatened, then they sue the govt to keep it endangered.
Dont you think that they should be celebrating instead of trying to keep it endangered?
~glamisgirl23~
flat tailed horned lizard is endangered...inhabits southwestern sonora desert, baja, and south western arizona. hmm....wonder if it's livin near glamis.
~glamisgirl23~
they are not taking into account the fact that everyone who goes to glamis to enjoy the dunes, is dumping tons of cash back into the economy. i mean, look at one tiny camp...that's a lot of cash invested.
not to mention mother nature...the dunes shift, that's what they do... icon_biggrin.gif
Robbie
The FTHL is one of the species that the USFWS has determined to not need protection.
Dont you think this should be celebrated.
Instead of contested in court.
If was all about saving the species, then the enviros should be celebrating.
~glamisgirl23~
duners are also helpin the blm with public awareness. if no one set foot in glamis, i doubt there would be anyone who would know what the milk vetch was.
~glamisgirl23~
yeah, they should be celebrating. just like they should be celebrating the fact that there is WAY more of that plant then they previously thought....
lol...think they'll reopen that 50,000 acres?

Not until they are forced, by a judge, to lift the closures.

This is not about a milk-vetch, tortoise, or lizard. It is not about saving a species or preserving biological diversity.

It is about power and money and a public relations campaign that began in the deserts of the southwest, aimed at promoting certain anti-access groups.

There is no care or concern for what these lawsuits are actually doing to the species. The organizations that are suing to shut us out of our public lands have absolutely no idea what the recovery rate is for the species they use in their lawsuits.

No do they care. They use the endangered species act to gain power, money and control. And if they kill a few species off in the meantime, they never break their stride.

what, then, in your opinion, is their motivating force for picking THIS battle? i mean, it would certainly seem like they have something against the entire community of people who want to enjoy the dunes.
**this would be a good spin for my paper..thank you!!

I believe that this particular battlefield was chosen due to its popularity and sheer size of the playground. These groups are used to winning and this was one great big beautiful jewel for their crown.

But also, we are such easy targets. We are our own worse enemies. We're unorganized and apathetic, only really getting upset when it directly effects us in some way. Not long after the closures first went up I was standing in line at Crazy Keven's behind these two young dirt-bikers. They talking about an info meeting coming up (they had a flyer in their hand) and were saying that even with the closures there is plenty of room to ride. They obviously weren't going to attend the meeting, since hey, there was still lots of room to ride. Not only apathy about the closures, but our faults (there are many) are plastered on film and in print all over the place with very little public relations work to the contrary.

And don't forget the BLM's role in this. They provide easy targets to these anti-access groups by not doing the things they are supposed to be doing. These groups pick a species that has not been monitored and then they sue to close down the area, claiming that off-road vehicles, cattle, military training, whatever, is killing the species of the area. No monitoring means there is no proof to the contrary and so the judge grants the closures and they put it in the "win" column. Each win brings more money to their organization.

Slappy McDuner is the host of GlamisDunes.com

You should be starting with the homepage of this site for some great information, by the way, not to mention spectacular pictures of Glamis.

As you increase your number of posts, your status changes... like with other bulletin boards. It's just a way of ranking the number of posts a person has to their names.

hmm....good point. some food for thought. sounds like a good refutation to me. these organizations you're talkin about....got any names?

thanks again...most helpful icon_biggrin.gif
~glamisgirl23~

From your other post regarding your paper, it looks like you probably have the player's names for the Glamis fight.

But there are other, larger anti-access groups that use these tactics too, such as Nature Conservancy, Wildlands Project, etc.

They all support each other and probably have links to one another on their websites, so it should make it a little easier for your research.

Believe it or not, the Sierra Club is now considered one of the more conservative anti-access groups out there. Scary.

Vicki

the sierra club? i've heard of them...not that familiar with em. lol..actually, this paper is my in-class final. i can bring only quotes and a teeny tiny outline with me. ive saved this topic for last, b/c it's near and dear to my family.

thanks for the info, btw icon_smile.gif
