RAZOR
I've been thinking of adding a race radio to my buggy wondering what kinds are being used. Are the preprogrammed with frequencies you need or do you need to specify? Any info will be appreciated.

I have an Icom IC-V8000 in my truck, its great. remove a diode behind the panel and you can broadcast on all channels. you can program it yourself, and its 75 watts! bought it on ebay for 180$ @ RFComponents in florida and they were great to deal with. when im doing pit work at the races i can usually reach people 30-70 miles away depending on terrain.

I have an I-com myself from PCI radios. Love it. Currently we have two rails in our group with them. One leas and the other brings up the rear. It works great for telling the group to slow up if something happens.

We have 4 rail in our group with the them. 3 PCI's and 1 RACERX setup that has been programmed with more race Fq's. We found some middle ground to work on for sure. That is one of the best things that I did to my rail. I wouldn't run without one ever again.

Sorry if this is stupid but are you guys able to talk with in the car and then car to car also using the same radio or is it two different radios?

Not stupid...

In car is intercom- person to person, just talk. Car to car is radio interfaced through the intercom, push to talk.

Our group uses dual band Yaesu radios. We can talk UHF/ VHF- read that Race Radio channels and Family channels ( the little walkie talkies). We hear everything... I even have some VHF handhelds and the wiring for helmets if I ever get around to it...

Best money my wife ever spent!

Yesau 2800 FT. They are about $140 new and have more power than what most companies offer.

I just added radios to my car, the guys put them in this weekend. I was the hold out, everyone else got them before me. We'll see how I like 'em while duning....

I want something for back at camp. I have a PCI race radio. Is there a hand held that has the range to use back at camp or is there a base station I can mount in the moho? Can someone point me in the right direction. I would prefer a powerful hand held with good range.
ANGELMONEY
I ended up finally with buying another radio and making it portable on wheels for camp. The problem with the hand held is that the big radios can reach the hand held , but the hand helds cant call back .

The reason for me making it mobile is because peeps at camp dont sit in the trailer or in the truck. You can take it out to the fire pit or to another trailer and listen in case they need you.

This came from when I wrecked in a bowl down by gecko. Had the radio but at 11 pm at night not many were in their cars to hear my cry for help.

Sand Tramp
I ended up calling PCI and ordering the base station with external speaker. I got it portable so I can just plug it into the cig lighter by the front door of the Mo ho and mount the antennae on the roof magnetically and we should be good to go. Be nice to have it when we are out, the camp can hear if something happens.

What did that run you?

So you spend $500 plus for radio, antenna, etc etc?

The radio I suggested is $140. I am not the only one using it and it works good.

To everyone, not just Tramp:
Guess what I am getting at is when people suggest something such as a radio and it's not a standard PCI or RacerX radio-why are people afraid of it? Need more opinions or don't trust mine?? Try SoCalDmax.

For base station use, a handheld has no advantages over a larger more powerful radio. Range is determined by terrain, antenna height, power and receiver sensitivity.

Since you can get a Yaesu 75 watt radio for about $140 and put a good antenna on it, a handheld would cost you more and would be limited to much lower power, like 4 watts or so.

I use an antenna with it's own ground plane mounted to the top of my 20' flagpole, so it's about 33' up in the air. With 75 watts and that kind of height, it can send/receive very well. It even receives the weather broadcasts from San Diego!

I did not mount the radio in the trailer. Instead, I bought the antenna and a magnetic mount antenna for the truck. I'm going to mount the bracket in the truck so that I can use the same radio in the truck or at the trailer.

I also programmed the radio with all frequencies used by PCI and RacerX, along with all of the weather band channels. This way the radio can communicate with any other race radio, regardless of where it was purchased.

A magentic mount will only work on a steel roof, not an RV roof.

PM me if you want any more info.

WOW that would be sweet. maybe one day lol....I still have a lot of other crap to get first..

The radio you are referring to I would need the intercom first? or is something I would keep in the car and use in case of an emergency?

Don't wait too long.

The intercom systems with radios are worth their weight in gold. One time another car and I collided, we were both coming to the other to talk and ended up hitting each other on a ridge. We each sustained over $2,000 in damage, which could have been avoided if we could have just communicated over the radio.

he is so right car to car can and will save your ass especially if your duning with a few cars. imagine breaking over a big razor at dumont and our leader is sideways car stalled ready to tip ph34r.gif four of us were following him if he didnt call us off we would have blindly broke over that razor pilling on one after another. i run avcom and they run pci any good quality radio would be good.
dunerdude
The only way to go. We also have a base station with any external speaker. Our radios are vertex and we programmed in all the race frequencies.
