250R all the way! The R handles better and you easily make an R with all the horsepower you will ever need

You really should add the Yamaha and Honda four stroke race quads to your list but of those two, I would say a piped raptor. Lots of torque, plush ride, and no pre-mix. I haven't seen anyone buy a 250R lately and not dump a boatload of money into it getting it the way they want. The 250R is still a nice bike but not what I would choose out of the two.

I would have to say the 250r is the better bike because of it's superior handling ability and a faster throttle response. The raptor or as a lot of people refer to it as the craptor is top heavy and has had a lot of tranny problems...
But I must confess that I have had my 250R for 17yrs and am still trying to find a bike that I would be willing to replace it with...

A bone stock TRX250r is superior in every way, except for a slight advantage in straight line acceleration by bikes two or three times it's size, to any mass production quad ever made.
End of story. Deal with it...

The raptor, it has the power you need and more, or the z400

I own both, the Raptor and the 250r.
Which one is better? I can't say. It depends what you define as "better".
I can easily choose between the 2 for the type of riding I do, but that's me.
Raptor vs. Honda
Fuel vs. pre-mix
Electric start vs. Kick start
Four stroke vs. Two stroke
Narrow vs. Narrow
The raptors maintenance is a breeze. No pre work, just gas it and go.
For the type of riding you are describing, get the one you can get at the lowest price.
