Full Version: What Is The Right 5th Wheel Hitch

I'm leaving the diesel pusher and going to a 5th wheel. I have not had one for about seven years.

My question is what hitch is "the one to have" I was looking at the pullrite slider for my '07 Superduty short bead.

Please list some choices

I am using the Pullrite Superglide. It is easy to use and nice to be able to remove it completely from the bed when not using it.

I use a Drawtite Signature Series Slider. Its rated for 18K. Like mentioned above, you pull it out and you have your entire bed again.

My husband and I have used the pullrite with our shortbed F250 pulling our 38' 5th wheel for over 4 years and not one problem. It is the best out there.

When you are shopping for a hitch, one thing to consider is the pin locking mechanism.

I've seen some with 2 jaws, and some with 1 jaw that wraps around. I think the 2 jaw is much more reliable and will not allow the handle to get pinned if the jaws are not fully secured. The single jaw type can give a false secured reading and allow you to take off thinking that it will hold. But it will come out and crush the bed rails.

My 2 jaw version actually came apart on me while towing once. The circlip came off and a connecting bar came off the bottom. However, it was designed to fail shut, and it would not release the kingpin while it was disassembled. I had to lift the hitch off the truck with the trailer landing gear, pull the truck forward, then pry the jaws apart, then flip it over and reassamble it.

I was perturbed the clip came off, but I regreased everything, installed new clips and it's been great ever since.

THATS WHY I GOT THE REESE 20K AND USE THE BEDSAVER ON IT AS WELL JUST IN CASE

i have a valley industries hitch, although it is not a slider (my truck is a long bed). i personally feel the 1 single wrap around jaw is less likely to have problems, there is less going on in the hitch to have fail than the 2 jaw type. personal opinion tho, carry on

On my next 5th wheel and truck I am going to convert to a goose neck and put a single ball in the middle of the bed. Get the one that can flip over and your bed will be fully usable when not pulling a trailer. I hate having the rails in the bed when the hitch is removed. Also the goose neck has a higher tow rating.

Me too, but have the 16K slider, no probs and removable with 4 pins.

However, I went with the Pullrite. A bit expensive but I think its the best deal.

I use a B&W a bit overkill for what we pull and worth the expense. The biggest thing I like about it is the rails are mounted under the bed of the truck so when you aren't pulling anything and you take the base & head out of the bed there are no rails. This makes it nice if you are trying to haul sheets of plywood etc. I'd buy another

Anyone else using the B&W gooseneck with the 5er adaptor ?? I am looking to move to a 5er and liked the way this set up looked easy to remove and install with one person as it comes apart in multi pieces.

Another option for people with short beds is the 5th Airborne sidewinder. It replaces the pin box under your trailer and moves the pivot point below the trailer instead of the truck bed. Cheaper then an auto slider and also reduces chucking with an airbag system. I installed mine and it work awesome!

I can not believe how good mine works, I can jack nife the truck with my short bed f250 I totally love it!!!

I like the idea of this but do you think that the Airborne puts any extra stress on the hitch itself now that the actual pivot point is directly under the trailer?

I had the same thoughts but, when I had this with my old truck 2wd for superduty, I had to bonzi threw the flats at 40 miles an hour so I would not get stuck, The truck was catching air and not one issue with the hitch
after that trip I know own a short bed 4wd and not one issue with the sidewinder, they fully back there hitch
